I just tried using 505 spray basting for the first time. I am so disappointed. This brand has been recommended on many posts/ topics by many people. I do not know what I did wrong but I found that I had to use almost a 6.5 oz can to baste a 70 x 90 quilt. I bought it from Connecting Threads for about $6/can since I could not find it locally. I may not use this again due to it seems expensive at $6/can per small nap quilt. I can pin cheaper even it it is not convenient when FMQ. Any ideas as to why I had to use so much? Other ideas?

I don't know why you had to use so much, defective can? I have the June Tailor brand from Joann's here and I really do not like it. It smells terrible and gives me a headache even with the windows open. I find it does not do as well as pinning the quilt. Pinning is more work, but I prefer it to using that stuff. My needle on my machine get gunked up with it which is also annoying.

I think that's a lot. I usually get 2-3 small quilts from a can. Frankly, I've used several brands.

I've used several different brands and only like Sullivan's, which comes in a pink can- I get it at Hancock's Fabrics, and I think Hobby Lobby carries it too. I can get 3-4 large quilts out of one can- the key is not to use too much. It's great stuff.

How did you apply it? I spray in a grid pattern every 6-8" or so.

I sprayed the backing in sweeping motion all at once and then laid out the batting. I then folded about 1/2 of the top back and sprayed the back of top, laid it down and then did the same to the other half. I have used a brand called "Quilting basting " that made everything sticky and I got about 12 -- 30x30 out if it but it was a large can. However the smell is so strong that it can barely be used out side with out a mask.

Maybe you'd be able to get away with using less. Also, try spraying the batting instead of the fabric. A can of spray lasts me thru several lap size quilts. I've been using the June Tailor brand.

I just saw a can of 505 for $21.99 at the Dallas Quilt Show. I did not buy it. All I have tried is the June Tailor and I am not impressed. I guess I will stick with pins.
