Does anyone know the dimensions to make a template out of cardboard for either or both of these rulers. The Spicy Spiral Table runner is awesome, but I can't afford the ruler along with the pattern to make it. Someone on this forum had mentioned the template out of cardboard and I thought that might be a viable option.

I hope you find a way to make it

I mentioned making templates out of posterboard for my Spicy Spiral Table Runner (I couldn't get the ruler locally at the time). I measured and drew a 10 degree angle on the posterboard and cut the templates from it. I used the pattern to decide how long to make each piece. Even though my template wasn't exactly what was called for in the pattern, it worked out fine. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-68251-1.htm
You can see the difference in using a 10 degree angle vs. a 9 degree angle in the post from raptureready(the 2nd reply down in the same thread).

The 10 degree ruler is 22.5 inches long, 1 inch wide at narrow end and 4 7/8 wide at bottom edge. these measurments include the 1/4 inch seam. hope this helps.

Thank you so much, I am in the situation where I cannot afford the ruler, cannot buy it here in England either and so wanted to make the spiral runner.

nativetexan 10-28-2010 02:04 PM

oh show us what you end up with when done. we'd love to see it.

paloma 10-28-2010 04:14 PM

if you make a 50 in. c and fold in half then fold in half again you will have 10 9 degree wedges in the one fourth

erstan947 10-28-2010 04:36 PM

One thing about this pattern it is very forgiving. I liked it cause you don't have to match any points!:) Close works good.

I have taken cardboard templates into my local Ace Hardware store and had them cut them out of plexiglass for me. I had two of them done the other day and it cost me $3 - - way better price than ordering from a quilt shop.....and for me better than cardboard

paloma 10-29-2010 05:16 AM

yes a 50 inn. circle 1fourth of circle will divide down to 10 9 in. wedges

I think I need to make a trip to the local hardware stores and see if they can cut one for me.... We don't have an Ace here in town... I wonder if Home Depot or Lowes would do it or maybe a glass supply store... ponder ponder ponder...

I think it so frustrating to have to buy the specially sized rulers. I had been looking at pattern for fall table topper and finally bought it without reading the fine print. Turned out that I had to have a 60 degree ruler. I wouldn't have bought it if I had seen that. So now my little table topper cost me probably $30 with fabric and ruler. Plus, I really didn't like using it. I would rather just have the measurements. I'm glad some of you can figure out the math and make templates, I tried but I'm not so good with math.

But aren't there other lines on the ruler?? I saw another tree skirt someone on this board had made and she used this same ruler, by Marily Doheny. But its expensive and shipping puts its over the top.
So I did the same thing and went to our local Ace, and they laughed at me, sooooo I said, Well your commercial is wrong, because you are nothe the Helpful Hardware Man, and walked out.
But I guess i could try Menards, they may cut plexi glass,

Just found this, as I can't afford ruler either, so will also make template. Was really struggling with measurements. Thanks so much!

My awesome husband makes me whatever I can "think up", he makes them in plexi glass and sands the edges. He is a keeper!

micawife 09-24-2013 07:55 AM

My husband said he could make me one if I had the top and bottom measurements....if anyone could help please it would be greatly appreciated. Can't find one here and being new to quilting, a little afraid to buy something I might not use more than once :)

draw a circle, use a compass and make your own then you can make it as long as you need

That is the way our grandmothers did it

Do you know the width at the narrow and wide ends of the 9° ruler also?
Thanks
