? about Colour Placement on New Bluprint Quilt
 

Bluprint sent out new, free pattern today (for members, I'm assuming..maybe for everyone?) called Chopsticks. I quite like it and as I don't have enough on the go....:D...I thought I might try.

Two things are stopping me though and perhaps the members here can help me.

First, the picture is a graphic, not a picture of a finished quilt. That puts me off because I tried a pattern that only showed the graphic once and it was a disaster...I'm not sure anyone had ever actually assembled that quilt, because I sure couldn't. I'm sure they have done better at Bluprint, but this does put me off. Anyone used one of their patterns before with just a graphic?

Second, the pattern calls for a jelly roll, but the picture shows very regular placement of colours....Can you really do that with a jelly roll? I've never bought one, so maybe you can, but it seems like it would be difficult or maybe I just don't understand how jelly rolls work.

For those who have Bluprint, it is called Chopsticks.

It's likely that with graphic print, they repeated colors/fabrics to make it simpler to design, but you can also do it a bit more "scrappy" and use a jelly roll instead.

This would give you a very different looking quilt in the end, so if you like it with specific color placement, you'd probably want to use yardage and cut your own strips.

I think I know the quilt you are talking about, Watson. Is it the one that's pretty modern and has narrow "sticks" that are symetrical at the top and then "fall" toward the bottom? Think I saw it in the Keepsake Quilting website in solidsI don't get BluPrint, so it was either Keepsake or maybe the Art Gallery or Northcott websites as I get their newsletters too. Cool quilt!

I just looked at the directions for it. I downloaded it when I got the email. It uses a jelly roll of solid colors and a background fabric. It really doesn't look too difficult to put together. You're just mixing up the colors to suit yourself. It would look good in a marble type colors, not sure how it would look in prints. I'm not big on solid color quilts, It looks like you have to keep your wits about you to cut those 45 degree angles in the correct direction, but otherwise I would say try making one block of some scrap fabrics and see how you like the pattern directions. I have lots of solid color jelly rolls here, but also have lots of projects that take precedence over that one. As far as the graphic VS an actual quilt made from that pattern, I don't know why she didn't use a quilt for the picture, but as I said, give one block a try and see how you like the directions. I have done that a couple times with patterns I was hesitant about, and ended up not making the quilt.

Watson I think you'll be okay with it. I checked it out as well. Doesn't look too problematic at all. Good luck!
