??? about scrappy quilts
I have just made a pile and i mean pile of 2 1/2" strips from a lot of leftover fabrics and want to make a scrappy quilt. Do you kind of color coordinate them or do you just grab some strips and start sewing them together randomly. Also what is your favorite pattern to make them. I know they are scrappy but just don't quite know where to begin. Thank you in advance.

Go to www.quiltville.com and you'll find all kind of ideas for scrappy quilts. You can also search the board and you'll find tons more ideas for scrappy quilts.

You can "organize" them to light and dark, or color, or randomly. Maybe a jelley roll type quilt would be a good place to start or rail fence. http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...e-t178064.html
This one can be done with matching fabrics or very random. Whatever you choose.....enjoy! |
I love log cabins for scrappies, just seperate light and dark. Quiltville ( mentioned in earlier post ) does have some great patterns as well.
If I am getting fussy about my scraps or in the mood to be , I will further sort them into themes - pastel, jewel tones , batiks , then do the light and dark sort once the themes piles are established. For inspiration search the thread on this board called "The Scappy Quilt Show". lots of great scrappies have been posted. |
another easy pattern for strips is to sew 3 or 4 together and cut to square. then alternate the direction for a rail fence quilt.

I love Edyta's patterns and have the book. I am cutting scraps to make a few. Luann

I prefer to have a mix of widths of my strips when doing scrap quilts. Using all the same size is too uniform in my opinion for scraps. I like to mix up the colors, patterns and strip sizes and I've never been disappointed.
|
I usually divide them into either blues (greens, reds, purples) or browns (orange, yellow).
|
Depends on what you like. I prefer to color group. Others are happy to take whatever out of the bag and use black or navy sashing around a large group to make them play nice together. You might even consider just separating the light and dark, using the dark in one section of the quilt and the light in the other. That's what I'm doing with my 2 inch squares. The darks are being made into hearts, and all the lights will be used to make the pieced border.

Here is an idea for your scraps. I have many cut into 2" strips and I make log cabins with them. I make some of them sorta color co-ordinated and some are not. I put them all together and choose a setting I like! Fun.

I put mine in a laundry basket and use what ever I pull out, otherwise I would put to much thought into it.

Someone on the list, I have forgotten who, unfortunately, guided me into making this one from strips. Not all of these were 21/2 to start with, but most were. I was very happy with the results. This was a guild challenge...to create a charity quilt from fabric scraps in bags.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas and pictures. I am a very visual person so the pictures really help. Thanks again. Barb

When I first started making scrap/stash quilts, I started with a string quilt. I put the strips in a box and pulled them out one at a time. I HAD to use the one pulled unless it was the exact one I just sewed on. The best advise is not to over think the process.

I made a strip quilt recently and found it didn't work to totally color coordinate, but one thing that does help is alternating lights and darks so that they compliment each other. I cut squares of prewashed muslin and sewed my strips to them diagonally, trimming off the excess. It turned out really nice and made a nice dent in my stash!

Take a look at this thread for all the fabulous ideas board members gave me!

I prefer my scrappy quilts to be in blended colors but
I am very obviously in a tremendously small minority. |
like Pacquilter i sewed my strips on a foundation+i alternated direction of seam--[otherwise i found it starts to twist off line] light /med/dark i sorted my piles into

I am very obviously in a tremendously small minority. I cannot bring my self to just reach in a bag and sew whatever color strip is next, it has to be pleasing to my eye. But that is what makes quilting so very, very interesting, as many different quilters as there are, that is how many different quilts we are privileged to see. |
That is a really nice looking top. I just did a version of Garden Path using strips for a Relay Quilt.

I agree with you TanyaL, I too prefer a more controlled scrappy quilt, if that is what you meant.

Actually, I may have used the wrong term in ignorance. My all time favorites are the ones that start in one corner with a light shade such as pink and end up in the opposite corner with a very dark burgandy, or start in the middle with the light or dark shade and end up on the border with the dark or light shade, but the quillt is totally all in the same color family just shading from dark to light. No contrast, just gradually blending from one shade to the next. That's my favorite scrappy quilt - no sashings. See, I told you I was in a minority. LOL!

No still not the minority Tanya....IMHO....I think what you may be describing is what I understand to be called Watercolor Quilts. I love them too!!!!! But two may still be a minority on this thread, but the Watercolor quilts are very, very popular and beautiful to my eye!

Kim Brackett has a new book out "Scrap-Basket Sensations". This is her second book of 2 1/2" strips quilts. Probable find this on www.amazon.com then go to books. I am cutting out the Picnic quilt from this book right now and several others I want to try. When you find this book, Picnic quilt is on the front cover. Good luck.

Jillnjo, I love your scrappy log cabin blocks. I really want to make one of these...I need to find more time. lol
|
It all depends on what you want to make. The strips make it so simple to make scrappy quilts and a great way to use up the left overs or small pieces of fabrics. Have fun!
|
If you want something quick do the jelly roll race quilt. It's really easy.
|
I, too make log cabins or similar blocks like that. Jillnjo, I like your colors.
