I just dropped off my new singer 201-2 at a sewing repair i found in the phonebook. He said he will give me a new foot pedle because the orig ones get hot after a while. I showed him the wire coming out of the motor in the back and asked if he could replace the wiring and he said he couldn't replace it but he would cover it with a cover. He said there is a guy there that "might" be able to replace it with new wiring but he's not sure and will let me know. Does this sound right? I'm thinking if he's just going to cover it and give me a new foot peddle I could have just done that myself... he also didn't quote me the price yet. Should i take it to someone else if he says he's just going to cover it in the back and not re-wire it?

I'm no expert because I have never had a machine repaired but it doesn't sound like he knows what to do! I sure hope he doesn't charge you a lot of $$$. BTW, your baby is beautiful, all shiny!!!

I would look some where else. Not sure why he is repalcing foot pedal, why he did not give a quaote and why he can't replace wiring.

I would pick up your machine and go to another shop... doesn't sound like a good shop..

Go on the Vintage Sewing Machine Shop thread here and ask Billy (lostin51) if he has a schematic for the wiring. Someone on there can walk you through it. There are lots of very expert people on that thread.

I took my 301 which I picked up at a tag sale for 30.00 to a Singer Repair person we have locally...He knew everything and anything abt Vintage machines...He did replace the old pedal...told me everything abt the machine, showed me, told me what it needed and gave me a price before I left it...in writing with warrenties on what he did.
I'd take it somewhere else...never leave anything without a price first. He can ask for the moon and hold your machine hostage until you pay.

ok i'll go get it tomorrow. i don't know why i left without a price that was stupid. he said he was going to look at everything and then give me a price but I'll call tomorrow to make sure he's not going to work on it before giving me a price. i am lost i don't know who else to take it to. i'll have to see if there is someone else in the phonebook that does repairs.

Beautiful machine!

I recently was given a 201-3 (same machine as yours but has the motor and belt rather than the potted motor). The wires were cracked in places and I was afraid of getting a shock. I had the machine rewired, foot peddle checked and the machine cleaned and serviced for $70. My repair lady had no trouble re-wiring it and her advice was to always check the wiring because when a machine is older than you are, it's parts may need a little attention. You have a great looking machine.

I have this same model - love it, love it!
I hope you get a decent quote prior to anyone working on it.
I'd also rather see new wiring than "cover" on old wiring.
