Accuquilt go cutter question
 

I received the Accuquilt GoBaby for Christmas. I love it! I mainly wanted it to cut up scrap fabric into usable pieces. I know that Accuquilt recommends cutting along the grain of the fabric, but does anyone not follow this rule from this when cutting up scrap pieces? Trying to get the most out of my scraps! Does it really make a difference?

I pay no attention and have never had an issue

There are only a few shapes that can have a problem if not cut on grain. The 5" square is one of them. What you can do is cut a piece of paper, then compare a scrap fabric cut to the paper cut. Maybe cut the scrap purposely on the bias or any which way. If the fabric cut matches the paper cut, you are good to go.

Edit: If you need really accurate fabric cuts, or if your fabric cut doesn't match the paper cut, you can starch the fabric heavily before cutting to get more accurate cuts. It's not necessary for most cutting, though.

I have been playing around and I found that if I starch the scraps pretty heavily (board stiff), I can cut any direction I want. However, with heavy starch it seems that no more than 4 layers is best.

Sometimes I sew scrap pieces together and then cut out shapes. This works great for the larger cuts. If a lot of pieces are sewn together I fuse a featherweight interfacing on the back before cutting with the die.
