Accuquilt Log Cabin Die
I want to make a log cabin quilt, and I want each block to be identical. I have watched the videos using the Accuquilt Log Cabin Die by Eleanor Burns, Marjorie Busby and the creator, Leslie Main. If I use this die, won't I be cutting each piece of material in all of the varying lengths. In other words, if I use 6 dark material and 6 light material, each of those materials will be cut in each of varying lengths. Am I missing something? If this is correct then is this the best way to cut my material or would I be better off just using the 1 1/2" strip die and cutting the variety of lengths? If my thinking is not correct, then please help me see what I am not seeing clearly. Thanks for your help.

i would use the strip die.
most likely less waste. definitely more control of which pieces get cut from which fabric. |
I too would use the strip die for better control of my pieces. For me, and I am so often these days on cutting, I would be much more concerned about making a miscut with the lc die only because I would switch up colors to easily. Use your strip dies.

There are several ways to build a log cabin block, so you should take a look at the way you plan to construct and color yours. Typically, a log cabin block has two strips of each length, a light one and a dark one. The exception is the last strip, and sometimes the very central ones. If you're making a scrappy log cabin, the AccuQuilt die will definitely work out for you. If you're making one with very deliberate color choices, it may not work out.

Thank you for your response. That is what I am thinking.

I have this die and made a red and white log cabin. I don't remember having lots of left over strips. I cut four layers at a time using two reds and two white fabrics. So one cut made eight blocks. The hardest thing for me was keeping the strips organized after cutting. I used a small design board to lay out one block at a time then sewed the block.

I have the die and plan to use it as the way it sets up you will be able to "mix & match" what you cut into your blocks correctly. Plus it will make sure you have very square blocks. Since most don't just use 2 fabrics per block, but rather a mix of lights and a mix of darks, it works.
