Accuquilt pros & cons

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Should I get a Go or save for the Studio cutter?
Thank you!

DebraK 01-30-2014 06:49 AM

how much room do you have? and do you want it out all the time?

ann31039 01-30-2014 06:54 AM

I have the Go and love it. Don't have that many dies yet, but I love the ones I have. Expecially the strip cutter. Mine was a little hard to turn to start with but it worked out in a day or two and is not a problem now.

nwm50 01-30-2014 06:56 AM

Big difference....price/how much time spent using/space availability is to be considered.
I have the go and love it but if u use a lot of appliqués, studio cutter may be better?
I love using strips and the 5" the most

love 2 sew 01-30-2014 06:56 AM

I have plenty of room & don't mind it being out all the time. Heck, everything else is. Lol

Onebyone 01-30-2014 07:04 AM

I have the Go and I would buy another one if it broke, no question. It is as important to me as my sewing machine. The only con I have for the Studio is the space it takes to keep it set up.
The dies cost more for the Studio but there are more dies to choose from. The Studio will cut more layers at one time.
The Go is easy to move and store. You can find Go dies at most shops.

quiltingcandy 01-30-2014 07:12 AM

I have the Go and love it. Fortunately I do have a sewing room, but it is also a spare bedroom, so I have to push my sewing machines to one side if I have guests. So I like the Go because it stays in the closet until I need it. Not to mention it goes on sale from time to time so you don't have to pay top dollar for it and can buy more dies.

willferg 01-30-2014 07:28 AM

I have a Studio and I consider it industrial strength. I wouldn't pay the money for it unless you *know* you are going to use the heck out of it. Not only is the cutter more expensive, so are all the dies. If you make lots of quilts each year, it might be worth it, but if you do it as a hobby, the Go! will probably be just fine.

Prism99 01-30-2014 07:35 AM

I have a Go! If I had the dedicated space for it and the money, I would get the Studio (which I have seen on sale for $400, I think). Although the dies are more expensive, in my mind the ease of cutting and saved time cutting make the Studio worthwhile.

LTeachergeorge 01-30-2014 07:41 AM

I don't have either, but researched for DDIL a couple years ago. IF I remember correctly, the studio dies are guaranteed for life. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I have the Go and it sits in the closet; only used it once and I have a couple dies for it. I would love to use it more, but don't know what I should use it for. Can ya'll show me some pictures of your quilts so I can admire them and maybe get some ideas. I would really like to use it more.

I've had the Studio for about 15 years and love it. I've cut literally tens of thousands of items so I can attest to its sturdiness. With the Studio, you can get adaptors to use GO! and Sizzix dies in addition to the Studio dies, so it really is versatile. It is big, however, you would need a space with about 14 inches on both sides of the cutter to use the large extended dies, so keep that in mind. My sister had a GO! and I really thought it was easier to crank mine. It is an investment, so you will have to do the math to determine if it's right for you.

mighty 01-30-2014 05:43 PM

I have both, I love my studio here at home you can cut many layers at once. I like my go cutter to take along with me. Both are really wonderful just depends on how much you need to cut and if you have room for the studio.

carolaug 01-30-2014 05:48 PM

I have both and love both. I store my studio on its side under my table. I can use all my dies on my studio with the adapter

SewCalGal 01-30-2014 05:59 PM

Think about what "projects" you might want to create first. Are you a quilter that prefers to piece or do applique". You may also want to check out the new electronic cutters (e..g Silhouette Cameo, Eclipse2, Brother Scan N Cut) as you don't have the expense of all the dies, but they also only cut one layer at a time. Still, you can control placement of the cut on the fabric better to minimize scrap.

What ever quilt you are making, the Go will probably have the die to do the cutting. All the basic shape and sizes are available in the dies. The website has a quilt patterns and the dies used to make them. The new dies are Hunter Star and Clamshell. I have the Log Cabin, Drunkard's Path (2 sizes) Winding Ways, Rose of Sharon, Rag die (2 sizes) large and small Tumbler, four sizes of Hex, five sizes of circles, can't list all I have but I haven't found a quilt I want to make I couldn't use a die to cut the pieces. Even all the dies I have I haven't come close to the cost of my sewing machine.

Misty's Mom 01-31-2014 06:26 AM

I have the GO and love it. You can adapt many quilts patterns to use the dies. The amount of time it saves is amazing. I would love to have the studio, but can't see spending the money when the GO does everything I want or need.

asimplelife 01-31-2014 08:06 AM

I have been trying to decide which model to buy too. Is the only difference between the Go and Studio the number of layers you can cut at one time? Or are there some dies that are only available for the Studio?

My main interest would be cutting strips (2.5" & 2"), squares (5", 2.5" & 2") and triangles to match up with the squares. I would love to try a tumbler quilt and some hexies. I like the new Hunter Star die.

Space isn't really an issue... I think I could set up the Studio in a spare bedroom (almost empty nester here!). Are the dies bigger for the Studio? For example could I cut a FQ into more 2" squares on one pass with a Studio? I've watched some of the videos at their site but I don't know anyone who has one to see them in person.

gale 01-31-2014 07:00 PM

I didn't care for the Go. I wanted to be able to cut a 10" square and it would have been impossible using the Go. If I had the means, and those were my two choices, I would get the Studio. I have a Big Shot Pro and I love it.

quilttiger 02-01-2014 04:13 AM

I use the GO a lot, so it is out on the table all the time. The strip dies are great not only for cutting strips, but the strips can be turned around and cut again into perfect squares. Just one of the reasons why the GO is a keeper.

Reba'squilts 02-01-2014 04:15 AM

I have the go. Love it!!! I like that I can store it away when not in use. I made a number of quilts using 2 1/2 inch strips. The go cuts them straight and fast. I have a number of dies, I keep an eye on the clearance at JAF and buy when on sale or close out. Would buy another!

nanacarolyn 02-01-2014 05:10 AM

I have the studio and bought the go adpter Love it because I can't cut my fabric good

caspharm 02-01-2014 09:54 AM

I had a Go and a GoBaby. I sold both of them and bought the Studio. I am much happier with the Studio. It has more range, even if it's not as portable. It can also accept all the other dies from the 2 Go's, the Sizzix, and Big Shot using adapters. I love being able to cut a large number of strips in a short time. I also made a quilt with the Go tumbler die. It's nice to have prenotched. If you like a certain shape and they don't have it yet, the company does do custom shapes, but they do cost.

The Studio from Accuquilt and the GrandeMark from Accucut are the same machine (different lines from same company), so you can watch both sites for sales. I bought mine on sale.

JanieH 02-01-2014 10:07 AM

I have the Go and love it. Don't think I would use the Studio enough though to justify the cost.

One of the best places I have found dies for it is Carolina Cotton Company which I found thanks to a post by another board member.

Also, a suggestion: Check out Ebony Love's book, "Big Little Book of Fabric Die Cutting Tips." She discusses the different machines as well.

My kids got me the a Baby Go, which is the one I hinted for, last year for Christmas and I LOVE it.
i have several die including the 2 1/2 strip cutter.
I just treated myself to the rag quilt die and what a time saver.
it cuts 4 layers of flannel and even cuts the fringe. Perfect since I have 5 to make for our gr babies.

mjhaess 02-03-2014 03:33 PM

I don't have one yet but the Go is on my list of must haves....I had a chance to use one over the Christmas holiday and I loved it....

sewbeadit 02-03-2014 04:43 PM

You can also use the go dies with your studio cutter with an adapter that doesn't cost much and you need only buy one. So you can use the less expensive dies on the studio and have a wider range of dies to choose from. I value my studio cutter.

I have the Go baby. I have the circle die, squares, and more. Family likes to get me the dies on birthdays, and other holidays. I want a hexie and a clamshell. The circles really save time and are great for yo-yo's. I have always wanted to make a clamshell but did not want to do the cutting. I have heard of stores with these machines who let people use them for a fee. I, gladly, share mine at club meetings.

quilterjody 02-04-2014 09:26 AM

I have the go and love it. I like the portability and the variety of dies. I use mine all the time.

pw6 02-04-2014 09:56 AM

studio, it cuts 10 times more pieces at a time and the plastic cover lasts forever and the go is tiny and cuts only a few pieces at time and the plastic over that goes over the dies is awful..
