Acquired quilt pieces

My neighbors mother gave me pieces of a quilt she was making for her grandson many years ago. She is 90 years old and can't sew anymore due to arthritis. On a recent trip to their house, she noticed that everyone had a quilt somewhere in their room, except him. So she asked if I could finish it for her. Problem is she doesn't remember what the pattern was. It is quilt as you go, so her star blocks are all done and quilted. I've got 17 triangles in various sizes, (some partially quilted) and 17 finished blocks. She also had the sashing fabric in the box. She said I could do it any way I liked. I want to use as much of her original pieces as possible, Ideas?

I do not have any idea, but just wanted to say how kind of you to complete this for her. It will be beautiful!! I am sure some of our knowledgeable members of QB will know!

Tartan 09-12-2016 07:00 AM

Lovely blocks! I might just do the center with the blue sashing. If you don't have enough triangles to go all around the quilt for a border, you could just add them to the sides. The triangles I would just sew to each other like you have them with no sashing and cut them to length.

bearisgray 09-12-2016 07:30 AM

Msybe she meant to set the blocks on point? Then the triangles might fit better?

I thought that too, and it would look great, but the triangles that she did have quilted wouldn't work on point. I'm still leaving that in as an option anyway.

PaperPrincess 09-12-2016 10:46 AM

tennesse waltz, maybe? That's set on point, 54-40 type block alternating with solid squares.

cjsews 09-12-2016 12:08 PM

Wild it work on point with the light triangles on the sides and the dark ones for the corners?

ckcowl 09-12-2016 12:46 PM

Turn on point, then the setting triangles fit & it will be larger - start top left & work down. That's why an odd number of blocks.

bernamom 09-12-2016 12:50 PM

If I do it this way, there is one missing block and 4 extra triangles. If I have to make an extra block, I may make a few more, because some are different enough that they stick out a bit. Maybe they weren't intended to go with this quilt....

I think your on point layout is probably right, it explains everything, including the triangles. She probably lost a block. You could make a substitute one for the missing one. She used many different blues, you could probably get pretty close.

Here's a layout that uses 17 blocks.

|XXX|
XXXX
|XXX|
XXXX
|XXX|

|-note this is just a spacer

If you make it a row of 3, row of 4, row of 3, row of 4, row of 3 it makes 17 blocks, you offset the short rows HALF a block.

It doesn't accommodate the setting triangles, tho.

It's sweet of you to finish this up for her.

materials witness 09-12-2016 02:14 PM

You have it right - just put the 2 squares at the bottom of your picture on top as the first row. Make setting triangles out of new fabric. Then use her triangles interspersed with new white ones as the border.

krafty14 09-12-2016 02:20 PM

You could start with 2, instead of 3, on point. It would be 2,3,2,3,2,3,2. Thereby using all 17 blocks.
Then perhaps the largest triangles would go in in the 4 corners, and the other triangles on the sides (4) and top and bottom (2). Or, if 14 of the triangles are all the same size, you could use 2 in each corner instead of one larger one.
I don't know the sizes of all the parts, so just taking a guess.

Jane Quilter 09-12-2016 02:35 PM

you are so wonderful to do this for your neighbor

kyquiltlover1942 09-13-2016 02:46 AM

How about printing a block with the quilt history on it to replace the lost block?

quilterpurpledog 09-13-2016 03:16 AM

This looks like a sampler quilt I made many years ago as a class to make a quilt as you go quilt. It was done using the
Georgia Bonesteel method. It was a great method. As for the missing square you could make one that is similar to those you have, or, you could write the story of the quilt, put it on a fabric square you can run through the printer (maybe use a photo or two) and put it into the quilt. The blocks are lovely and the story touching.

red-warrior 09-13-2016 03:54 AM

This will be beautiful when done and so nice of you to finish it for her! I think the dark blue sashing makes the blocks pop. Please post when you are done, I would love to see it!

Karen G 09-13-2016 04:19 AM

Looks like it is set diagonally.

elly66 09-13-2016 04:30 AM

I have no suggestions that hasn't already been stated. Bless you for doing this for her and her grandson. He'll treasure it I'm sure

Debbie C 09-13-2016 05:05 AM

The navy should be easy to match if you don't have enough there. I'd sash all the blocks...I think it would showcase each one better. Just my humble opinion. Lovely of you to take on the task.

waltonalice 09-13-2016 07:45 AM

I love the second way that you laid out the blocks. I had also thought of forming them into a central medallion. Then you could use as many of the triangles as you needed and you'd be free to add borders as necessary to make a big enough quilt. You are a very kind person to help this elderly lady complete her desire to complete something wonderful for her grandson.

tessagin 09-13-2016 07:51 AM

All these suggestions. I just have nothing to add but am anxious as I know the other members are to see it completed.

SuziSew 09-13-2016 10:11 AM

If you don't want to make a replacement block you could take out a couple and make matching throw pillows with them...It's very sweet of you to do this for your neighbor, be sure and post the finished quilt!

maviskw 09-13-2016 12:04 PM

I agree with on-point, and that she may have lost one block. But about those triangles that won't work.

One scenario is: She worked with those triangles, found out that they wouldn't work, and that's why it turned into a UFO. I know of many quilts that end up in that state for such reasons.

So I like the sashing idea to finish it. Good luck. You're a doll to be doing this.

ekuw 09-13-2016 01:54 PM

I am currently making a quilt from the Eleanor Burns book "still stripping - after 25 years". As soon as I saw your blocks I thought it was very similar. Here's the link for her book :

You would need to put cornerstones on the sashing, but you might be able to do a similar layout.

I love puzzles and playing with EQ. Will this layout work for you?

Hey! That could be it! What a great story and a kind thing for you to do!

cathyvv 09-13-2016 03:27 PM

Whatever you do, it will be gorgeous! I was thinking a red sashing, but it looks like a navy sashing was already started!

jmoore 09-13-2016 05:26 PM

It is going to be a wonderful quilt...and you are an angel for helping her complete it. I'm sure she is most appreciative.

BETTY62 09-13-2016 06:10 PM

How sweet of you to help out your friend's Mom.

bernamom 09-13-2016 06:24 PM

So many great ideas! Now I really feel like I has some direction. I'll post pictures when I'm done. Thanks everyone.

Gaby 09-14-2016 04:21 AM

Let your creativity flow, you have beautiful blocks to work with. I have been in a similar situation, and considered it my person challenge. You will like what you did, I am sure of it. And you are very kind to do this. These acts of kindness makes quilters special people.

osewme 09-14-2016 07:23 AM

I can't wait to see what you do with these special blocks. It is so kindhearted of you to finish this quilt for her to give to her grandson.

mac 09-14-2016 11:54 AM

Yes, you do get a lot of 'quilty' points in Heaven for this. It is really wonderful that you are willing to make a 90-year-old lady happy, when she knows that she would have never been able to finish this on her own. God Bless you for this.

vschieve 09-14-2016 08:16 PM

Did you post a picture(s)? Why am I not seeing it. Is there something I need to do in settings?

Judylee2 09-16-2016 02:52 AM

I agree with Bear, that this quilt is probably placed on point with setting triangles. I think the pattern is 54 -40 or Fight.

quilting cat 09-16-2016 11:33 AM

What size is the bed? That might affect your choice for a final quilt size!

Quilter 65 09-17-2016 05:36 AM

Gay, your mockup is lovely. Just really appreciate the fountain of knowledge and willingness to help of board members. Really great and so helpful.

red-warrior 10-11-2016 09:38 AM

I hope you can figure it out, as it will be beautiful and the grandson will love it ! It is so kind of you to do this for both of them!!!!!

It does look like Tennessee Waltz block. Very nice. Love the colors. To me it looked like all the block were the same pattern, but different fabrics, almost like a sampler.

About the missing block, maybe you can embroider a center block or corner block with similar colors, with some blue snowmen or something like that. If you don't think some of the squares really match, maybe take them out and embroider some solid squares and work them in.

Just some ideas. It would be a waste to let these nice blocks go.
