Adding borders - help!

I normally sew two pieces of border together if they are longer than the quilt, measure the quilt in three places, average the number, pin the border so the seam is midway between top and bottom.

I'm starting a mystery quilt and she says to sew all the border pieces together so you have one long border. My question? If you do it that way, don't you have the seams showing up in different places on each side of the border? I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, because I think I've confused myself even more!

I do that and I have less waste with the border fabric. If you sew them all together in one long piece, then measure and cut the desired length. I don't worry about if the border seams are centered. I think they are not a noticeable if they are in different places...depending on the print of the fabric.

I have done it both ways. I do agree with maryb119 it seems to generate less waste starting with one long piece and then cut to size

I agree with michelleoc. I try not to have my border seams in the middle of the border -- makes them less noticeable. And I'd rather use less fabric.

Will have to remember that. Makes sense.

The only thing I really pay attention to is to be sure the border seams are not at the corner of the quilt.

Wow! Thank you so much! Once again, the group has helped me tremendously.

I also try to not have the seams right across from one another.

I try not to put them in the middle or across from each other...but really after it's quilted you don't send the seams...

I have done it both ways also unless it is something small.
