I was just wondering with the price of fabric .. when you shop for a project are you reducing the "fudge factor or margin of error " when you purchase?
Lately it seems I am not so inclined to have the "leftovers" like I used to. At first it felt risky... the "what if factor" .. but I gotten along OK ...
So are you buying just whats needed or adjusted the fudge factor in your purchases when buying for a specific project.?

I'm still a hopeless fabriholic! I still buy more than I need.

I always buy a little extra because I hate to run out. I get too nervous cutting if I know I have just enough. The extra just gets thrown in the scrap basket for my scrappy quilts.

If I really like the fabric, I will buy 1/2 yard more than I need. If I REALLY REALLY REALLY like it, I'll buy a yard :) Otherwise, I try to be good & stay close.

I buy extra, 10% or more on average, just to be safe (and have scraps for later).

i'm kicking myself right now because i don't have enough of the fabric i need to bind the quilt i'm working on.

and i bought 4 yards more of it than i thought i would need!

the extra was supposed to be for future projects.

Ouch!!!

I used to faithfully buy a yard of whatever print, but I started scaling back at the beginning of the year, and before that it was 1/2 yards mostly.

(I'm a scrappy kinda gal though)

I usually buy more than need

PrettyCurious 07-15-2011 05:32 PM

Oh no. I don't reduce the amount I buy, just the amount I pay for it. Garage sales are my friend!

Painiacs 07-15-2011 06:28 PM

I buy lil extra so if I mess up!

clsurz 07-15-2011 06:29 PM

No!

If I see something I like I buy it and most times at least two yards of it.

I don't have a project in mind at the time of purchase. I just see it, love it, and buy it.

I usually buy the fabric, then figure out what I'm going to do with it. Cart <----- Horse.

quiltgrammyt2 07-15-2011 07:13 PM

If I'm following a pattern I will round it up by a 1/4 of a yard, and if I'm designing my own pattern I just buy and hope I have enough. Sometimes I have to make some adjustments to my original plan.

wolph33 07-15-2011 07:29 PM

if I like it I always buy a lot.sometimes a lot is not enough

I always purchase more than I need. It great for my grand daughters to work with when they come to visit.

BellaBoo 07-16-2011 05:06 AM

I buy fabric on sale or clearance prices so I don't skimp on the yardage. If I mess up I toss it in the scrap basket and use it for something else later.

Phannie1 07-16-2011 05:14 AM

I like having a little extra fabric. I buy what I like even if it is a little bit. You never know when that piece of something will be the perfect fabric pattern or color.

Stitchit123 07-16-2011 05:38 AM

I've been on a forced fabric diet and IT IS torture But back in the good ol' days I always started at 4yds for the Gotta have Its and 1/2yd over for most others.. The thing about fabric is it never goes to waste  and on gloomy days my rainbow of fabrics is worth its weight in gold They lift my spirits and I'm smiling again :-)

Holice 07-16-2011 05:45 AM

The need for fudge has nothing to do with the cost of fabric. Higher cost doesn't assure my accuracy or the accuracy of the pattern. Now you might cut back from 1 1/2# of fudge to 1# and be a bit more careful in calculating and cutting and watch the shop cutter more carefully. Or, when the shop employee says "there is 1/8 yd left....and want to charge you for it, you might "just say no"

Glassquilt 07-16-2011 12:28 PM

I still buy extra. Ran out once - hope to never have that happen again.

Mariposa 07-16-2011 01:00 PM

I usually buy at least 1/4 yd. more than I need. More if I really like the fabric, and will use it elsewhere! :)
