Advice on design with a panel
 

I have a quilt panel and some yards of coordinating fabric that I'm hoping to use to construct a queen size quilt. Are panels such as the one used in the attached picture normally just used for small quilts and wall hangings? I'm afraid that when expanding the quilt by adding the 7 paper-pieced blocks around it that I may have minimized the impact of the panel items. What do you think. Any advice on what you all would do in the same situation.

oh look up some panel quilts online. pinterest may come up. you can get good ideas on other's work with panels there. I think they look great as a center for a quilt.

I think your quilt looks fantastic. You pulled all the colors together so very well. Great job!

I’ve used many panels over the years to make Queen- king size quilts. Panels are a great ( inspiration/ focus) place to start. I love the quilt you show. I don’t think the paper piece blocks take away I think they enhance the panel blocks.

When I did my peacock quilt I just kept laying it on the bed as I went to make sure I liked what is visible on the top of the bed...... the outside borders hang down the side so even though I really like them, I don't think intricate piecing is required. I did quite a few flying geese in mine.

I see nothing wrong with starting a quilt with a panel, no matter the size of the panel.

The panel pieces look very detailed, so I think they would have to be appreciated close-up regardless of what setting they appeared in. I think this looks excellent.

I like the way your paper pieced blocks seem to float over the surface of the quilt. Your panel pieces are well integrated and at first glance seem to be another layer of the overall pattern offering an excellent contrast in scale. It did take me a second to actually see the detail in the panel pieces, but I like that effect because it draws me further into the quilt and makes me want to keep looking. This is an excellent quilt design and I think you used those panel pieces to great effect.

I love quilts that incorporate pre printed blocks to cut apart and use in a larger quilt. I know they are sold as "panels" but I don't consider the finished quilt to be a typical panel quilt where you leave the panel intact and add around it.

equilter.com has a lot of free quilt designs that incorporate panels, both those that are to be used as one peice and those that are meant to be cut apart and used as blocks.

So many questions for you!! Ahhh! First, Julie Paschkis prints -love them! I've got a few panels from Luminaria, and I'm planning to use them in a quilt in this manner too. I'm pondering if I will use all the fabrics from that collection or blend them with solids. For myself, I think I'll probably go with a simple set of additional squares in coordinating solids, since I'm still polishing my basic skills. Also, I'm so in love with the graphic panels, I'll probably minimize my blocks around them.
I love the colors you have going, blending in the Azuli tiles as well. It has a nice balance... did you design it with quilting software?
