Advice Needed - Please
2 Attachment(s)
I'm making a baby quilt on short notice. It has to be done by April 20th. It's important to add that I'm new to quilting, a major procrastinator, and I work full-time. The mom picked a Dr. Seuss theme. I thought I would make a quilt similar to my avatar since that was easy and I love how it turned out.
Well, I'm not feeling this quilt at all. It just seems boring. I was going to use the yellow fabric for the sashing, but I do not like it at all. I like the white better, but it still does nothing for me. I was going to do a 2.5 inch saching and then do a boarder of 2.5X5" rectangles of the different Dr. Seuss fabrics with the red and white polka dot as the binding. I used 5 inch squares to make the big field of blocks. Is there some easy method where you can cut the four patch block and make a pinwheel? What else could I do? I'm really picky and my daughter says I should just put it together like I planned. TIA for any advice you can offer. |
What about making a thin white sashing, and thin yellow sashing? Then you could use the narrow blocks for the wide border? Hope this makes some sense.

What about a narrow yellow inner border then a dark blue outer border? I would then FMQ something cute on the solid border. Bind in either the yellow or red. Just MHO.

I like the yellow with it....better than the white.love the btight colors

I like your original plan with the yellow fabric with the polka dot binding.
|
I am LOVING the yellow! Great looking start and I hope you stick with the original plan.
|
Love the yellow, and your big field of blocks! It's darling!
|
Use the yellow, but put a red flange around the center to add Interest

I've made a couple of quilts with this fabric, and the aqua color has been the key for me. Have you tried using that instead of the yellow?
|
I agree with Julie. I would go w/ white and aqua. You have plenty of red/yellow in the blocks. I think the baby and the mommy will LOVE it! What are you using for backing?
|
Love your quilt, how about using the white sashing and bind it with the red and white polka dot fabric
|
This sounds like an excellent idea. Good luck!

What about blue it will go with the blocks - that might just work - and use the red dots for the sashing -

Red or blue jumped out to me at first.
I'd say "audition" different combinations till you're happy. Either way, the Mother and baby will be pleased. |
IMHO, I would stay away from the white. It is, after all, a baby quilt and if the baby is anything like my granddaughter, the quilt will get dragged around the house, spat up on, peed on, pooped on, and spilled on. Keeping the white white will be impossible. I like the idea of using blue.
My DGD is almost 5 and cuddles up with her BoBo every chance she gets. |
You could even make some pinwheels & add them to each corner. I've done that. Turned out cute.

I think the blocks are really cute and I like the idea of the aqua blue

I went this afternoon and bought aqua blue fabric. I love the red and aqua combination. I'm backing it with the yellow chevron/zigzag. What color thread should I use on the blue? If I use white it will really show and my FMQ is scary. I was thinking of not quilting that section or using blue on top and white in the bobbin (if it doesn't show through). Thanks again for everyone's help and encouragement! :)
