Advice please!!!

I would like to make an I Spy quilt for a special little boy. I was wondering if those who had made I Spy quilts could share their thoughts on the best way to make one. I have about 18 months to make this quilt, so I have time to collect special fabrics etc. Thank you for help and advice in advance.

I haven't made one yet since our munchkins are past that age but saved some charms for gifts. A lot of quilters get the variety they need by swapping fussy cut charms. If you have some local gals who all want to do the same project, it's a great way to make this project economical. Basically, you just have to decide if you want to have a matching eye spy or all different pieces and the layout design you'd like. If you don't have anyone to trade with or prefer to find unique pieces, smaller cuts will do the trick. Sometimes you can find charm packs online that other quilters made up to save yourself some time.
Have fun!

I made one with the disappearing 9 patch pattern.

this is a cute square in a square http://raeleescreations.com/quilts2.php (not mine) and I've also seen them in snowballs. Fons and Porter had a cute one a while back with magnifying glass layout if I remember correctly. I have a copy somewhere if you like the idea.

I've made several but I like the attic window best.

I made a very simple one - just 5" squares with sashing. I did have the thought, but didn't do it, of embroidering in the sashing the item in the block.

Another cute version is a jar quilt with bugs, marbles, etc., in the jars.

me too, on the magnifying glass quilt...so cute and really not hard to find the two coordinating fabrics needed for each block... as for little kid quilts, i like the 'i spy' things hidden under little 'book flaps'.... just two little squares which are placed over the character, tow, picture or whatever you are hiding.... then i include one or two books with the appropriate items in them... i.e., bob the builder books with trucks, cement mixers, tools, hardhats...all hiding.... the story reading becomes a game of 'Concentration' as the kids have to find the right hidden objects.... (i use little velcro tabs to close the little 'books')

I had this site bookmarked because it had so many different/awesome I Spy quilt ideas. I've tried twice and couldn't get the link to work, so I'll just post the link and you can copy and paste.
