Advice on quilting this?
1 Attachment(s)
I'm a new quilter. This is my 3rd full quilt, and I've done a number of mini ones. All have been free motion quilted. I'd call myself a decent beginner with free motion. I have pieced this for my mother for Christmas, but I don't know how to quilt it. I want to highlight the diamond shapes, but I don't like the idea of just rows and straight lines. Thoughts?
I always try to think of what will enhance the piecing. Good Luck.
I would SITD along the diamond shape design first to anchor the quilt. The design looks spaced about 10 inches apart and then I would put a different FMQ design in each round. Lovely top!
No advice. Pretty quilt. I like the pattern and colors.
I would go with an all over design with lots of curves. Straight lines would make it a bit regimented, I would think.
Looks like this is the first time you've posted. Welcome to the Board from NJ, and love your quilt.
First Welcome to the board! I would do curves. Love this design. Where did you get the pattern?
Stunning quilt top! I'm not sure yet about the dark brown, but for the blue triangles I would do Leah Day's "Wiggly Pasta" & for the orange sashing I'd SITD & then add 1-2 straight lines down the center of each sashing piece. I'd probably just SITD around the tiny red-orange triangles.
Maybe echo quilt into the dark brown shapes??? |
No quilting advice -
Love the colors - they just glow! |
WOW, what a beauty. I would also love to know the name of this quilt.
I got the design from pintrest after looking at this quilt - https://www.pinterest.com/pin/204984220516515339/
There was no pattern, but it's just 30 of the same square. |
Thanks!
You're all so welcoming! Thank you.
I'm hearing curves and maybe SITD. I'll take that back to the drawing board and will post a picture when I'm all done. Any other ideas are welcome! |
I have to post that I think your quilt is gorgeous. As for quilting ideas, perhaps echo quilting inside all the black sections. I love the graphic angularity of your pattern, and against the usual advice would go with straight stitching. Square grid in the green/orange sections.
I think SITD around the outside and then alternate between two patterns -- one more linear/stippled/pebbled and the other more curvy/flowing (like feathers)
I love your quilt--the pattern, the colors, the contrast--it is beautiful. I have no idea how to quilt it, but it is stunning.
I can only comment on what a great quilt this is...especially for only your third!!! It's beautiful!
I would follow the diagonal diamond shapes with straight stitching lines. Then I would go back and stitch lines about 1 inch apart using blue painters tape as a guideline echoing the shapes. This is a modern look and it can be done easily with your walking foot.

Welcome from central Michigan! Your quilt is beautiful. I love the colors. Your Mom will love it for sure
sharp quilt !!!
This is a beautiful quilt! Very nice job.
Gorgeous quilt. When I have that many linear seams, I like to STD than add some motion to it with some curvy quilting. Good luck with whatever you do. I am sure it will be as beautiful as the quilt itself
I say stid the diamond and do ripples between. kinda like ripples in the water.

Your quilt is just beautiful!

It's got "wow" written all over it. So I would FMQ the words "wow" every 6 inches. Haha. Just kidding. Love the design and your vivid colors.
