Hi,
I am attempting a GFG. I really don't like the look when I add the pathway to one block then letting it become the pathway on the next block. Can I put the pathway on all blocks there by having a double pathway. Is this doable (is that a word). In my vision it makes the flowers float. Plus I won't need quite as many flowers.
TIA
Trudy

It is your quilt, so you can do anything you'd like. And I think a double pathway would look nice.

I think that would be very pretty. If your not sure, just take some and lay them out and see how you like the results.

A double pathway is "do-able", will work and will be very pretty. Good luck!

Thank you so much for letting me know it was doable. I do have two completed and I do like the look. Just didn't want to do them all and find out it had to be ripped apart. A friend told me I need 4 yards of fabric for the pathway. That sounds like an awful lot of fabric.

Yes you can put the outer ring around all of your GFG before putting them together. I've seen it done both ways and they are equally pretty.

Very doable :D:D:D I can't wait to see you quilt!

I'm not sure but it doesn't seem like too much if you're doing a large quilt and a double pathway. If it is, oh well you'll have some to use in another quilt or as a purse lining.

I like the way you are thinking, sounds very pretty.

A double pathway would be just fine. I have seen some with NO pathway. I am not so fond of that way. Seems too busy to me, but to each his own. There are so many ways to put a hex quilt together. As soon as I'm finished with the one I am working on now, I plan to do a diamond pattern. If I can ever learn to post pictures, I'd post a couple! Keep waiting for DD to come "teach" me. Why is it that young people are always in such a hurry!

Your quilt-do what you want. If in the end you don't like it, you will know next time.

Yeah for me, I have 5 blocks done with the pathway on them. Just laying them out on the floor I can see I'm going to have to cut so blocks in half on the sides. Or is there a way to make half blocks.

have fun and love to see it soon

craftybear 05-16-2010 01:31 PM

can you take some photos and post so we can see what you have done so far? please, thanks!

I have never done half blocks. I fill in the space with hex's in the background or pathway color. Mine all have white around the "flowers, so I fill in with white to square it up. I have seen half blocks however. They are do-able.

Yes, it's easy to make half blocks, you only have to make half the amount of hexes then sew them together, leaving half the flower undone.

Thank you, and yes, try here ... http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-116008-1.htm

If that doesn't work, go to the Pictures section and look for My Purple & White GFG.

If you go to this webstie... http://www.historic-american.com/20thCenturyQuilts.html and scroll down almost to the bottom and take a look at "516, Grandmother's Flower Garden" this quilt was made with double pathways! The quilt right after it is another way of doing it with double pathways. But you would have to add the diamonds to your todo list!
