I have a Facebook group for selling my quilted items.

Would you like to have a look and tell me whether or not my prices are inline with what you'd think these items would be in your area?

Newfoundland has been in an "economic bubble" during the recession meaning that for the most part the recession hasn't affected us.

I am selling some things but getting mostly lookers. Is that about right?

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=102981553710

Thanks Lori

I looked but I'm fairly new to FB and I don't see any prices or products when I click your link, maybe I just don't know how. :(

Mamagus 08-18-2009 03:52 AM

When you click on the link, you scroll down the page until you get to the photo section. Click on one of the the thumbnails and then you can advance to the rest.

marsye 08-18-2009 03:57 AM

Thanks, I found it. You make beautiful quilts and the prices seem reasonable to me but I just make quilt blocks, not quilts. Have you tried selling on Esty and Ebay? I do very well on both.

Lacelady 08-18-2009 04:09 AM

They seem more than reasonable to me, I can't see how you can have anything for yourself with these prices, your costings surely hardly cover fabrics?

pocoellie 08-18-2009 04:34 AM

Your prices seem pretty reasonable to me, maybe the word isn't getting out?

I think when I have more things completed, I'll try the "E's", but for now I am feeling my way.

I have three orders for special items but I was really hoping to sell some of the things that are already done!

On most items I am getting twice the cost of materials. I love making things and I got tired of giving them away and having a perfunctory "Thanks" offered for my efforts. I want to buy a quilting frame and this is cleaning out my HUGE stash and giving me some cash to put towards it!

MollieSue 08-18-2009 05:33 AM

All your quilts are truly beautiful!!! I don't know anything about prcing though, sorry.
How are people being directed to your site? Are you able to advertise it somehow?
I'm guessing they'd all go really quick on Ebay!
:-)

Lori, your work is lovely and the prices don't seem high to me at all. In fact, I think they are very reasonable!

Of course, being a quilter I understand how much time when into to each of the items.

The economy here in the US is not doing too well right now as you know. I sell stuff on E Bay and have found ending prices to be significantly lower than in the past.

MelissaK 08-18-2009 07:36 AM

Your stuff is gorgeous and reasonably priced. I love the fall and sunflower wall hangings. You did beautiful work. The economy does stink here and it seems to be affecting us all. People don't want to spend the money!

twistedstitcher 08-18-2009 07:44 AM

Your work is lovely and I think your prices are very reasonable. But as quilters, we on this board know how expensive it is to make a quilt. People that don't make quilts have no idea of the cost of materials plus all the time involved, and are so often not willing to pay what it's worth. I would try Etsy as well, you might have better luck there.

Good luck, I hope you can sell some of your beautiful creations!

amma 08-18-2009 07:47 AM

All of your quilts are beautiful and I think the prices are very reasonable too!!!

Cathy M 08-18-2009 08:10 AM

Beautiful work! You go girl- your prices are more than fair and the lucky owners should treasure your outstanding creativity.

Darlene 08-18-2009 09:13 AM

I think your prices are very good I really like the name panel that is so cute.

Jared 08-18-2009 10:16 AM

It actually seems like your prices are too low to me. I would seriously consider selling on Etsy (forget eBay, not worth sellign handmade items there). There is a huge community on Etsy. Other sellers are very helpful and the buyers are usually very appreciative for unique handmade items. There is also the ability for people to contact you with custom order requests. I think your name quilts would really do well there. The fees are also reasonable and you will have a nice polished storefront with a massive audience.

For pricing, I wouldn't necessarily try to compete with what you feel others are doing. If you are doing this to make money then you should really work out the pricing in terms of the cost for materials, time and labor. Make sure that you factor in your time! Don't undersell yourself or you run the risk of burning out or giving up.

Keep at it! :D

SharonC 08-18-2009 10:42 AM

I was looking at you quilts and the pricing and thought that you were under-pricing yourself. Maybe b/c I realize the time, material, and effort that goes into a quilt.
They are beautiful quilts and there's no harm in branching out to etsy to see what's possibly in store for you.
Good luck...your work is well worth the money.

Mousie 08-19-2009 01:08 PM

I agree with everyone else, beautiful quilts at fantastic prices!
Are there quilters in your area...it's a fine line, between they would make them, themselves, and don't know enough what treasures they are viewing?

ai731 08-19-2009 01:28 PM

I agree with those who have said that your prices are very fair (and maybe even too low), and that you should seriously consider selling on Etsy. I think you will do very well with your baby quilts and name panels.

Could you tell me the name of the block in your "Butterflies at the Crossroads" quilt? We did it as a BoM at my Quilt Guild, but the lady who brought the directions couldn't remember what it was called!

Thanks!
Jan

mamaw 08-19-2009 02:49 PM

Your quilts are lovely; and your prices are very reasonable. You might even want to consider charging a little more. At those prices, they should sell fast!
Good luck with it.
Nancy

butterflywing 08-19-2009 03:06 PM

if you sell online it doesn't matter where you are. the price is the price. your quilts are stunning works.

i think the prices are just a tad low. on the smaller items, especially. i know people don't want to spend on small stuff, but they can take some time in the doing, can't they? on the queen quilt, i think you can ask $400. i know you want to sell off what you have, but would you take an order for a different color? would you charge extra for a special order like that? maybe you should consider it. in stock items and special order items. slightly different prices. after all, now you have to go shopping with someone else's colors in mind. maybe a $25-$30 difference? sound fair? at that price, it's a small percent. actually if you sell off your samples you can't take special orders, so keep those photos.

Mamagus 08-19-2009 03:41 PM

Thanks every one! My hubby and I have had some disagreements over my prices. He thinks I am WAY too low. I think that since the Facebook group is mostly local people I can't over price my items.

I have sold a runner, a name hanging and a crib quilt and a lap quilt. Not bad in three weeks I guess. But only the runner was already made. The rest have been orders. I paced my delivery dates and I am ahead of schedule.

Now does have anyone have any ideas as to which quilting frame I can use with my Janome 6600??

Gee I am sorry I can't tell you the name of the block. I got the pattern from a book and it was called that in the book.

barnbum 08-19-2009 04:10 PM

Your stuff is top top quality and I'd go a bit higher... unless you want to start lower to get customers coming--then raise them. They seem a bit--just a bit low to me.

I agree, I think for that work you are to low. Even if it is in your neighborhood, the prices should reflect your costs + time+ profit. Your work is just beautiful!

Hugs,
Sharon

barnbum 08-19-2009 05:38 PM

Yup. You mentioned doubling cost of materials--I've heard triple it.

sewmuch 08-20-2009 06:56 AM

Lori, your quilts, etc. are beautifully done and your color combinations are
perfect. Your prices are very good too, could be a bit more. Nancy

Lori

Your work is amazing!! Hopefully the next time I am out your way, I hope to be able to meet up with you!

Have you tried "NF Wanted" or Nf.wanted? can't remember the exact name, but Trevor goes to that site all the time. I'll find out the exact name of it when he comes home from his "guy's only" trip with his buddy in Vegas. He comes home tomorrow. I'll ask him over the weekend.

I have sold things off e-bay and have done pretty good. I haven't tried Etsy yet but I do have an account. Right now I sell most of my work through word of mouth. I get alot of sales from here at work. I will be going into Christmas production mode next month. I have people here at work now asking me what I will be selling this coming Christmas season.

My mum's friend is a sewer as well and alot of her sales are from word of mouth and she has built up a good client base.
How about advertising in your area, make up some posters, business cards, etc and post them in some of the tourist areas out your way. I know there are many in your area after going there myself last Fall. Trevor and I want to go back this Fall if we can for a long weekend!

Put a small classifed ad in the newspaper, or other local newspapers. If there is a consignment shop out your way look into it! That's how I started selling my work.

Start a blog/website!

ooh what about this??? Since your family owns O'Briens Whale Watching Tours, would you be able to approach them to put some of your work in their building to sell? How about making a line of products with icebergs, puffins and whales on them??? You know the tourists will suck that stuff
up!!!!

I would also bring my prices up a little bit more! You are worth the extra price!! Your work is fabulous!

Hope I could help!!

From one Newfoundlander to another!
Andrea

butterflywing 08-20-2009 11:14 AM

i'm still thinking that custom orders should be a wee bit more than in stock items. i really like the touristy whales idea. that sounds like a great thing to do. small stuff that they can travel with and bring home as gifts. trivots, runners, hangings. with machine applique. "hand made by local artist".

quiltmom04 08-20-2009 01:06 PM

I think your prices are EXTREMELY reasonable - underpriced even. I think you just haven't found the right venue yet. Don't "give" your work away - your work is lovely and you deserve a good price for it.

sewjoyce 08-20-2009 04:51 PM

I think your work is just gorgeous and possibly a little underpriced!!

But whohoo! you're selling stuff and that's the whole point, right? You can always inch up in prices.....

Marcia 08-20-2009 06:51 PM

Hey, Lori--

I looked at your quilts and I agree with others---Etsy would be a great place for you to be selling!!! My daughter sells on Etsy and does very well for herself.

I also agree that your prices are too low. Especially the queen blue and yellow quilt for $200---you need to ask at least $250 for it. And custom work always brings a higher price....remember--not everyone can quilt and others are willing to pay for your time and talent!!
