you question won't offend anybody. :P

i wish i could remember the name but i ran across at least one shop that stressed their african fabrics while i was doing the fabric shop hop. they have another hop starting 1 Jan. you could play in the hop and find your shop at the same time.

http://www.fabshophop.com/

also, if you google the phrase "african quilting fabric" a nice long list of sources comes up. this one looks particularly interesting and useful:

I thought I had bookmarked the site, but must've lost it in switching computers. Several projects help African women bootstrap weaving businesses and then buy the fabric through co-ops. If it is in my bookmarks from another name, I'll post it. Wish I could remember the name.

I was fortunate to meet Sonie Ruffin, the designer and author, at a quilting retreat is CT.

Just as a humorous aside, I have a good friend who spent some time in S. Africa, teaching in the universities. While there, she wanted to purchase some African fabric to bring home. So after a big ordeal (long story) she was able to get some. She was thrilled with her purchase, until she was packing, and noticed on the selvage, "printed in the USA." :D

That reminded me of the story Jenny Beyer’s told in the introduction of "Color Confidence for Quilters" about the “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” she created in India. Without the traditional colors (fabrics) available she ended up doing one in rich muted colors that was quite different from the norm. When she returned to the States, and showed it, everyone was fascinated with her sense of color, thus engaging her interest in the subject.

Hey Annette, last time I was in Oklahoma for a visit I found lots of great Japanese type fabrics at the local Joanne’s; did you check in their specialty prints section?

I saw a booth at the Houston show called St. Theresa's Treasure Trove Textiles. They had a lot of African fabrics. I'll look around for the program from the show for the exaact web address. Hope this helps! Virginia

Annette:

Fabric.com is having a sale and there were two different African lines advertised. One is called Radiance, and the other is Out of Africa.

Hope you are finding everything you need!
