I used to think that my 1/4" seam was accurate and consistent. I was sure of it, because when I did my first (and second) - a 4 patch - everything lined up nicely. Came to find that they were consistent, yes...consistently bigger than a 1/4"! Learned that one doing warm wishes, where my strip blocks were consistently smaller than my square blocks!! There was a lot of trimming and ripping going on...but I learned how to line up my seams BEAUTIFULLY!! I finally took a hint from here and stuck some painter's tape on my machine as a 1/4" guide and I'm working on a D9P, and oh the ease and glory and wonderfulness of consistent 1/4" seams!! :D

The good news is that you learned faster than some of us.

I learned that trick too!! What a difference it has made!! Who ever the person was that first came up with using the tape has my gratitude!!!

I need to do that with mine, but I don't have any tape aside from packing tape and keep forgetting to buy some. I didn't know anything about seam allowances with my first 2 quilts, and it is beyond obvious. I have gotten a little better, but still not as consistent as I need to be. I know it will come back to haunt me once I branch out into more difficult patterns.

I think most of us have learned that lesson the hard way. The more you do the better you will get!:)
