All the same or mixed
5 Attachment(s)
The pattern calls for mixed half square triangles...but when I showed the block to another quilter said when she thought of trees they should be all the same. So opinions please.
|
So the initial design calls for scattered random HST instead of planned as individual trees?
That's largely a personal taste, either way can work. I typically go with many repeats each with a different fabric, I find many different fabrics placed randomly even with strong contrast and reading as similar to be rather chaotic but it is exactly the right choice in some cases! So no help at all, up to you. |
I like all the layouts. This is another case of your personal preferences. I just want to see what you choose and pictures of it when it is finished.
|
Personal opinion. Designer had one thought, quilter has another, you might have either or a third thought. Don’t let someone else make the decision for you.
|
I mean, if you're going for an overall 'scrappy' feel, I think the mixed patterns for each tree looks fine! I'd say, continue with 'mixed' pieces of any other components for the rest of the quilt, if it's a full quilt. If it's just a small block or two by itself, it's just fine to me as mixed green fabrics.
|
I agree that this design could go any direction successfully. If it were me, I would probably use the same fabric on the HST's that form the left/right of a level of the tree, but use different fabrics on top, middle, and bottom.
|
Both arrangements would be fine. For me it would depend on if I had enough fabric for a good random mix or just enough to do each individual tree in one fabric.

JMHO - I like the individual trees with all the same, but then mix up the various trees. Some one fabric/hue, others another hue.
As far as mixing up the individual trees - how would it look with a top layer one fabric, middle layer another fabric, then bottom layer the last fabric. Could be ombre-ish - medium, medium-dark, then dark. Might play with that idea a bit. Just me - but I didn't like the left/right sides being different, ~ so you whatever makes your heart sing. =) Have fun with it! Donna Mc |
I would prefer each tree to have the same fabric. Doesn't matter as it is your quilt and you can do it however you like.
|
I have never seen two trees in nature that were identical.
I love your different fabrics and think they would look wonderful! |
I think each tree in 1 fabric is more appealing than having all fabrics in 1 tree. Maybe seeing more than 1 tree in the mixed fabrics might look quite nice.

Many thoughts here, resulting in “pick which one you like best.” It’s got to please you, the maker.
1. In nature, trees and grass are never just one shade of green. There’s a mix of forest green, blue-green, yellow green, grey-green. So feel free to be artistic by imitating nature. Mix up shades within each tree. 2. Keep all triangles within one tree the same, but vary the trees. 3. Think of sunlight hitting one side of the trees. Put all lighter greens on one side, all darkers on the other . |
I would prefer each individual tree to be the same. To me, it would make each tree stand on its own, rather than X number of blocks all looking basically the same. But, that is just me. This is your quilt. Do what makes you happy, and makes you look at it and think, "I really love this!" The only opinion that matters is yours!!

When I go out and sit under a tree and simply gaze at it, enjoying its beauty I also notice all the different colors, shades and patterns. The leaves are as varied as people’s fingerprints, there are dark, medium and light greens, leaves / branches are all different sizes, shapes.every part of the tree is different from the part next to it. The perfection and beauty in nature is in the imperfections

I like your different fabrics. It makes your trees all different and interesting

I had this same issue when I made https://carterquilter.wordpress.com/...nce-beautiful/
I was following the pattern with the "scrappy look" when someone said they thought each leaf should be all from one fabric. I was using 9 different batiks. I tried it the non-scrappy way and I really liked how each block looked. DH convinced me to follow the pattern. I really loved the scrappy look of the finished quilt... and I would not have been as pleased with the same fabric leaves version. |
I seem to be in the minority here but I really like the trees with the random triangles.
But it's your choice. |

And trees are not all the same color. New growth on pine trees is usually much lighter than the old. Disease and age of branches can cause them to be different. Your quilt, your colors.
