Before I had 5 back surgeries and had to go on disability, I was an xray tech for a lot of years. It is very demanding physical work and one of my gifts to myself was to always have nice cotton (breathable) scrub tops. I have a box of lovely all cotton tops Iam considering using with some solids to make a quilt. A kind of memory quilt of my past life if you will. Has anyone ever used this type of fabric dfor a quilt? TIA ladies!!

Sounds like a great idea to me. I've never made one but have seen lots of memory quilts posted here that were done with clothing.

I say go for it!! It will make a wonderful memory quilt :D:D:D

I think it would be great. They are already prewashed and everything. Go for it!!!

bjnicholson 11-10-2010 10:46 AM

Absolutly. Just look for the same weight fabric to go along with it and it should be great. Be and sure to show us some pics when you git 'er done! ;)

I think that would be wonderful. You could do something w/stars and use each of the tops for a different star. Cut strips with what's left and put together 'piano' border. It would be so full of memories each time you snuggled under it. And think of the saving for fabric $$, lol.

way back someone posted a picture here of a quilt made from scrubs.

You could do a sampler quilt with block representing different aspects you'd want to remember. If you do a sampler with boarders around each you could cut the sashing strips first (mark and set aside) and fussy cut the blocks. Or if you have so many that you have more than enough cut sashing strips from some and blocks from others. And if you have enough you could do the backing with something like rail fence, 4 patch or 9 patch blocks.

It's just heavier. Allow for thicker seams when you piece and get going.

Absolutely, go for it. The prices I paid for those scrubs in a uniform shop - WOW,- put them to good use. Great idea

Ditto!

Not memory quilts, but I'm making an ice cream cone one from mainly scrubs. They have the most yummy colors and are nice and washable, and they are colorfast.
The scrubs keep showing up in garage sales and flea markets often because we have a big hospital around here.
I think you could make a lovely, long lasting quilt from them, they are part poly and wash well and sew easily.

Lots of scrubs are part poly and just about all the pants are, but my tops are 100% cotton. I just got too hot wearing anything with polyester in it, even small amounts. It reminds me of the solids we had years back at the fabric stores, I think they called them polisehed apple solids? Does that ring a bell with anyone?

Sounds like a great idea to me.

Terrific idea. Try Bonnie Hunter's site. She is good for scrap quilts.

We make photo quilts for people and use clothes that were special in some way. The work just fine. I would think they are all mostly the same weight of fabric which would make it even easier.
