I've seen a lot of threads where people are having a lot of problems with free motion quilting. I thought you might be interested in a alternative way to quilt with your home machine. I bought a book called "Foolproof Machine Quilting" by Mary Mashuta, published by C & T Publishing. In it she talks about using your walking foot for not only straight-line quilting, but also for curves and for following around paper shapes. Some of her ideas are really clever. Be careful using your walking foot for some of your machines decorative stitches, though. I found out that some of the stitches can't be sewn with the walking foot, so you would have to switch to a different foot. Check your owner's manual first. I've done 2 quilts with some of her techniques, and it's a lot less frustrating than trying to maintain a consistent motion with FM foot. :-D

I have to go slowly and it does ok. I also trac what I want and follow better than trying it without pattern. So many different ways to FMQ. Thank you for the post.

Thanks for review. I found a book how to do quilting with a walking foot and it's very good too. It's called One Line at a Time by Charlotte Warr Anderson. She explains how to use removable labels to mark the quilt for quilting.

Something to think about before I try free motion, although I find as I go along it gets easier and more comfortable. It is one of the most difficult techniques to learn in quilting and consistency is the name of the game.

I like FMQ but that could be an interesting alternative to try.

I have that book and it's definitely a keeper. Easy for a newbie to understand, too.

I also have this book and highly recommend it. I've used the techniques on several children's quilts and combined with my dismal FMQ on a couple of others - the designs made the quilts!
