I guess not because I had not thought of that either

good idea too!

no you would just have your feed dogs down and pull the quilt down as you were quilting it.

MS quilter 10-06-2010 06:23 AM

I am last and I've been quilting on the machine a long time. Why oh why did I not think of that? Can't wait to try it. THANKS!!

christinetindell 10-06-2010 06:57 AM

Oh yeah, it saves your back because you aren't hunching to see where you are going. I finished two projects this week by FMQ and am working on a third. I have about 12 that need to be finished and with a wedding to pay for on the horizon, I can't send stuff to my LAQ.

Me too :(

cmilton 10-06-2010 07:26 AM

LOL. that is the only way I have ever done it for that very reason.
since there were no quilt police around i kept it up.

rosiew55 10-06-2010 07:31 AM

I`m so confused,, I`ve been a seamstress and also a sewing machine operater for 25 * years . But I`ll try anything.. would you happen to have a pjoto for the `show me` types. i`m really from Texas but i need the visuals. Thanks!
I`m probably gonna be told to take meds again,, What the heck did I do wrong i wonder? talk too much?

patdesign 10-06-2010 07:40 AM

Me, I use the quilt hoop and supreme slider and go all different ways.

itsmesuzq 10-06-2010 07:44 AM

Oh my gosh!! I'm new at FMQ and after thinking about this it makes so much sense to pull the fabric towards you, instead of the other way. I love all the FMQ videos on Utube now but it's hard to remember everything you see and hear on the computer when you're sitting at your machine. lol Thanks again!

Minnisewta 10-06-2010 07:46 AM

Not the last thanks for the tip!

plainpat 10-06-2010 07:46 AM

Just a tip for the many ppl saying they're about to try FM quilting.Be very careful if you're using a hopping foot. The needle can go thru a finger very easily, ask me how I know.....nope, don't ask

Ohooooo, that hurts me inside out! Thanks for the reminder. Hope your finger is better.

klgreene 10-06-2010 07:49 AM

Clueless!

rosiew55 10-06-2010 07:50 AM

What wonderful lightbult moment . It is always wonderful when you get those 'ahah' moments of thinking outside the box.

Thanks for sharing. :-D

penski 10-06-2010 08:33 AM

that is the way i do it and was taught that way , i will go anyway that it is comfortable sometimes i will go sideway as long as it works and looks good

Free Motion Quilting. The feed dogs get dropped therefore the only way the fabric moves is when the operator (you) move it, and if you move it too fast or too far you will get lots of loops and stuff on the back side you absolutely do not want. I suggest you practice until you find your rhythm.

LucyInTheSky 10-06-2010 09:04 AM

I turn my machine sideways and then quilt towards me for a section, then away, then towards me, then away. The sideways makes it easier to see what all is going on :)

Lyncat 10-06-2010 09:42 AM

smarty!!!! GREAT idea and I can't wait to try it. Maybe my FMQ will vastly improve.

jridner1 10-06-2010 09:56 AM

by no means the last, thanks for the post been thinking of trying

kittycats 10-06-2010 10:29 AM

I have got to try this out. Would never have thought of this on my own. Can't wait to get home and see how this works! Thanks

Pinkiris 10-06-2010 10:32 AM

The last time I did FMQ, I wondered about moving the fabric from the back to the front, but it hurt my brain to analyze it while I was quilting! Now that I'm away from the machine and can think about it, it seems like a great idea!
Isn't it great how we can learn from each other, as long as we're not afraid to say something?

Sue

twinkie 10-06-2010 10:54 AM

What a great idea. Thanks for the tip.

twinkie 10-06-2010 10:54 AM

Sorry, I posted twice in error LOL

mpeters1200 10-06-2010 01:48 PM

I just tried FMQ for the first time yesterday and I saw it was easier to follow a line if a sewed toward me instead of away from me. So, if I understood you correctly, I just picked that up yesterday....just seemed easier to me.

I tried quilting with my machine sideways, let me tell you, I thought I was sitting backwards the whole time. It was kinda hard to get used to. I put my machine all the way to the right of the table, closest to the outlet, so I use use the machine sideways and still reach the foot pedal.

DH comes home from work and has a laugh seeing me in the corner of the table and the little bit I was working on spread over the table. He says "how can you quilt like that?"

I went outside to take a break, I come back in and my machine had magically moved to the middle of the table, still sideways. I told hubby, I can't reach the foot pedal when it's like that. He says, yes you can, I split the table and instead of putting a leaf in, I just put your cord in.

It took me hours to figure out how to use my machine sideways and still reach the foot pedal. Took him less than 5 minutes to figure out a solution....usually, it's me that's the last to figure out anything!

purplefiend 10-06-2010 02:34 PM

I never thought of that either. I'll try it with my next quilt.
Thank you!!

quiltingnana1 10-06-2010 03:22 PM

What foot are you using to do this? Sounds great! Will definitely try it. thanks for sharing. :-)

Definitely, not the last. You just shared it with me, who hadn't thought about it. Thanks.

zz-pd 10-06-2010 06:08 PM

Thank you for the tip, I will try this the next doll quilt. God bless.

No dear, with the quilting foot on, and the feed dogs lowered, pull the fabric toward you instead of pushing it into the machine. (I think)

bjdemir 10-06-2010 08:20 PM

Will have to try this - I seem to go every which way.

Dee 10-06-2010 08:37 PM

I'll try it. Wonderful helpful tip.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 10-06-2010 09:00 PM

May be the first to figure it out!! Thanks for the tip !

needles3thread 10-07-2010 10:21 AM
