Today was a frustrating day! We had a lot of storms in the area - it was very dark, thunder, eventually we had hail and heavy rain.

When we have or are likely to have thunder storms, I not only don't use my sewing machine or computer, I unplug them from the power strips.

Am I overly cautious? I didn't get much done today!

If you can't afford to replace them and you are more comfortable unplugging them, unplug.

Nope not at all.. I tend to do the same...especially shutting down the 'puter...crafty_linda_b

I do the same thing.

No you're not. A computer or computerized sewing machine can be fried with a power surge. There are special power strips available. But you're smart to unplug them.

I unplug mine too.

It's a good idea. I had a neighbor house hit by lightning and all of the electrical stuff was ruined! So, unplug is a great idea.

Yes, I turn off what I can and also unplug them... better to be safe than sorry...

Me too, but I'm talking to an electrician about a whole house surge protector that is actually hooked in before your main box. Might save me and hubby some peace of mind.

Continue to unplug.
After my experience this summer "blowing up" two power bars when we had power surges, I'm a lot more careful too. The two power bars blew out to the point of bending out the back of the bar and charring the shelf they were on!
