Before I go on with this post I'd like to show better pictures of the stained glass project I'm working on. I know I've shown video of game play from Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, but it wasn't very good quality and didn't show the best angle of the windows.

I want to try to match the colors as closely as I can. I don't really want to resort to picking out colors that are...you know...the same general color and kind of the close amount of dark or light without actually being that same color. I think that might even be even harder than trying to find exact matches because its still got to look good with the other colors. And there are at least 10-14 colors on these images. I mean, I'll comprimise if I absolutely have to, but I'd really like to try and find exact color matches first. Am I being too picky or is it okay to have a very specific plan/vision in mind and go for it? |
No, not at all.
You have a vision of what you want your project to look like. In my opinion, you will be unhappy with the final result unless you stick to your vision. If that wasn't true, my guess is you wouldn't be asking if you're wrong to be picky. |
Have you looked at the variegated batiks or ombre fabrics? They go from light to dark in color ranges. Batik Cascade by Avlyn is one brand. Chromatix by Timeless Treasures. Moda Marble Ombre.

Yup. I'd say try your hand @ dyeing. Dharma is reputable and fast and accurate. I order large orders from them every year, and have never, ever EVER ever been disappointed. They rock.

I have considered hand dying, but then I did the math.
Let's go with the sage pictures above. There are six of them. Each of them have at least 10-14 colors....probably closer to 14. For arguement's sake, let's say none of the 14 colors on one window wasn't in any other window...a lot of the time they aren't sharing a lot of colors, if any. So 6 x 14= 84 colors. That's a lot of different colors to dye by hand. I will, however, will be buying some of Dharma's products for screen printing for my other Zelda related project. |
The bright purple, for example, is a 2:1 ratio of Chinese Red and Brilliant blue.
Black = Better Black The teal in the same picture = Kelly green + Brilliant Blue 4:1 Grey = Grey. You could water down black for this. ************************ If it were *me* I would buy a set of: Chinese Red (or Fire Red) Kelly Green (because green is hard to match for me) Lemon Yellow Brilliant Blue Black Soda Ash Squirt Bottles Urea (so you don't get speckly reds) |
I'd say keep looking or keep dying so when you find that perfect color The end result will be PERFECT too!!

If you have an image in your mind of how you want it to look, then that's how you want it to look! And that's that!
The problem comes when you are working against a deadline (whether it was set by someone else or by you) and you can't find what you want and have to settle for what you can find quickly. If you don't have serious time constraints, keep looking...you'll find it eventually. |
Be picky if that is what makes you happy. Everyone has their own ways of doing things and that helps keep life interesting. BTW I think your quilts are charming and beautiful and unique.
