American made fabric
Has anyone actually sewn with or washed and dried the fabric that is being made here in the USA? If so, how does it compare to other major fabric lines?
|
If it is the USA made fabric sold by Connecting Threads I am impressed with it. I am using it in a bargello right now and I love it. I am a pre-washer and the fabrics did shrink 1/4 inch length and width. Only had 1 fabric to "bleed" which was a deep red but after second wash all was good. If there is more out there please post a llink. I'll be glad to give it a run for the money.

I bought some at Jo Ann's and it is very nice and worked well with the project I was doing and it was on sale!!!

I used a batik from Jo Ann's. I didn't think the fabric had a very tight weave for a batik, and the color catcher had some dye after the first wash with syntrapol, but on the second rinse it was fine. I know I don't sound very enthused, but I got it for a back, and I would purchase it again.

I've only seen the American made fabric -- don't know if I'm impressed with it. It seems rather thin, is very stretchy and has a loose weave. It would be interesting to see how it washes up.

My LQS has some and I am thrilled with it. I bought some at Joann's but haven't used it yet..it looks really nice to me. I did see some that seemed loosely woven but I didn't buy it. I am thrilled America is making fabric here again. We had some fantastic mills. I hope they come back home!

I bought some of the American made cotton at MQX. It is a solid color; it's been machine washed & dried but I haven't used it as yet. The weave seemed a little bit looser than some of our quilting fabrics but then I've noticed that several of the big name fabric brands seem this way now, too. It came out of the drier in pretty good shape - that is I don't feel that it wrinkled nearly as much as some of the other solids we've been using for years. And at under $7 per yard, that makes it attractive!

I don't know where the fabric is made, but I do know I love the fabric from Connecting Threads.

I didn't realize that the fabric at Connecting Threads was made in the USA. Does anyone know for sure?

Unless Connecting Threads has changed their practices, their "USA made" fabrics are spun, woven and printed in Central and South America from USA grown cotton. Clothworks AMB line is grown, spun, woven, and dyed in the US, 100% made in America, from field to fabric. http://americanmadebrand.com/about/ |
And check out their blog tour -- 50 bloggers designing 50 "license plate" blocks of their home state using the AMB solids. It's been interesting.

Bought a yard from American Made Brand and washed it and it is great. 100% american grown and made. and great choice of solid colors. I bought the color card and under $7.00 a yard. Yea
Also got 2 different yards of flower printed from Jo Anne's, washed and dried it and it is nice quality. I am so happy to have material made in America again. Will be ordering more solid color for a Dresden plate quilt. just haven't decided what solid color, will have to get out florals and see what color goes best with the colors I have. |
I think connecting threads has said their fabric is not made or grown in the US.

Love the American made collection at Joanns.

Here's what connecting threads said on facebook a while back:
Connecting Threads Our fabric is not made in the USA. At one point we said it was "Grown in the U.S. Cotton", which was true, but too many customers misunderstood this to mean "Made in the USA", so we've dropped that marketing message. When we first started making our own fabric we tried to find U.S. fabric printers to no avail. |
Ditto. I have ordered enough for a queen quilt and a wallhanging kit from Connecting Threads and everything was great.
|
I decided to start only using Hobbs batting as they use cotton grown in my Great State of Texas, supporting our local cotton farmers.
|
I just bought some from Joanne's but haven't had a chance to use it price was good and the fabric seemed good. I sure hope we bring home our factories and make things in our own country so we stay on top and have jobs for our men and women coming home and here already. USA first. Sue
