I am trying to make a candle mat that has triangles and longer triangles to shape autumn leaves. I cannot figure out how to join all the triangles together so that they meet and can be sewn to an additional square. It always comes out crooked. Does anyone know of any tutorials that would explain this procedure?

Hello and welcome. I think we are going to need a little more info. Maybe a photo of your block, or a link to the pattern you are using.

These are two blocks I have completed and sewn together. They are crooked - not sure if I'm putting them together correctly. Any hints?

Looks like you just need to square them up a little :)

The left block,turn it around where the tip of leaf is pointing out,to the left.

Love your fabric choices. I would square them up first. You may also want to verify that you are sewing a 1/4" seam.

If you square the pictured blocks up, you will loose some of your points, but hey, have you seen what leaves look like in nature? Rarely perfect!!! |
Thanks Paper Princess. I appreciate your comments and will look at your links. I know leaves aren't perfect but mine are definitely not like the picture in the instructions. I'm pretty new to quilting and was just wondering if I'm even sewing them right. Thanks for your help.

Keep at it! You sure chose a challenging block for a new quilter. Your Figure 1 blocks look good, but the figure 2 block should be symetric. It should either have the same amount of white on either side of the point, or all 4 pieces should meet in the point with no white sticking out.
When you cut the B pieces, you did reverse half of them to get mirror images? |
You might be stretching the seams as you're pressing them. Those seams are on the bias and it's easy to stretch them when pressing. Since you are a new quilter, you might not know to be especially careful on these types of seams.
Try making some more blocks and see how you make out. Good luck! :thumbup: |
