There is a pattern in the "Quiltmaker " November/December 2010 magazine that I would like to try to make. But when I read the directions the block begins with an 8 inch square of two fabrics and after it is cut and sewn back together a couple of time I am to square it to a 9 inch square. I'm having a huge DUH moment. If I start with an 8 inch square how can I come up with a 9 inch square? Has anyone here made this block with these directions?

I've never done this block, but here is a link with pictures. Maybe it will be helpful.

Nice block. I like it!

think of it in square inches - TWO 8 inch squares is equal to 128 square inches....one nine inch square is equal to 81 inches...the difference of 47 inches is lost in seam allowances and trimmed off edges...
|
Thank you KTBB, I never looked at it like that. Now it makes sense. I was wondering the same thing. Starting with a 8" and ending up with a 9" block.

This block is excellent. Her book Rotary Cutting Revolution is the only quilt book I bought this year.

My mom in law and I made this block this past weekend and it works out OK to about 9 inches square. Really cute and easy to do without a "pattern"!
|
Can someone explain how it goes together and where the cuts are made. The link only says "sew the seams and make the three cuts."
Anyone up for a tutorial? |

I love the book. There are lots of fast cut block patterns, I really like the Self Mitered Log Cabin block.
|
Thanks, Bella Boo.

And I found that a 10" finished Pineapple block has a 60% loss of fabric to seams during construction. The more seams in a block, the heavier a quilt becomes. |
Anita, which book is the pineapple block in? Is it an easy pattern?

Anyone up for a tutorial? you should consider contacting her directly if you have questions. |
I am very stingy what quilt patterns or quilt books I spend my money for. I usually try and figure out a pattern for myself before buying. When I thumbed through this book I knew I had to have it. I didn't even look at the price until I swiped my card. The price of the magazine for this block pattern is a bargain. Thanks Anita! I'm looking forward to more of your block patterns.

Thank you!
I'll put that book on my "to buy" list! And thank you also for taking the time to explain it to me! |

In fact, I must love Anita Grossman Solomon because, after checking my quilting library, I see that I now have all three of her books. And, yes, I collect books like I collect fabric. Should just be more proactive in putting the two of them together in actual quilts. |

OMG, you mean we are suppossed to BUY the books and patterns??? Just kidding!!
I have Ms. Solomon's 'Make it Simpler Paper Piecing' and she is a very talented lady. We have used the super size 9 patch for many charity quilts. Love the pineapple avatar, I'll have to take a look at that book. |

My friend told me about it. I was just now looking for the pattern. She says it is easy. She said you can make it as large as you want as long as you can divide the number by 4.

I made two of these Arrowhead blocks this afternoon in about an hour. The instructions from Quiltmaker website were quite clear. However, when I got to the last step I could not get a 9" square - only and 8 & 1/2" square. I don't really see that as a problem, with this block if they are all consistent they will go together just fine...just a hair smaller. Would like to know where I went wrong though.

I just pulled the digital copy of the mag and got the PDF. I made 5, yes 5 blocks in one hour. I love how they look and when joined together they make another design. I am going for the whole quilt and just ordered the book. I tried to attach a picture but it isn't working.

It took me a minute too. On the page where she's showing you, her pictures are in columns instead of reading from left to right. The first pic on the left (tan background) shows the first seam - down the right side and across the bottom from right to left. The second pic down (tan background) shows the exact seaming again but you've turned the block end for end. The third pic down (on the cutting mat) shows where to cut. That pic has the white circles. Back to the fourth pic (upper middle) etc., etc. Hope that helps

Did you get some help tjradj?

Yes. Iam making a quilt for our bazaar in the fall from this pattern. Remember you are using 2 8" squares. This block come out fine. Might add you may want to press the seams that are in the corners open as it does get bulky.
Another tip make sure your ruler if using a 9" size have diagonal marks going both directions. I happen to be doing the 12" size and my squaring up ruler only had one diagonal mark and the 1/2" was added to the other 2 sides. Could not square blocks till I drew another line on back with Sharpie. This make the square in the center correct with 1/4" seams. Have fun. |
If you will go to this link, the Anita's Arrowhead pattern is being offered by Quiltmaker as a FREE download:

6 of us in my quilting group made these quilts last year. It was fun and they went together pretty easily. It is fun to see all the different ways they turn out because of the fabric choices.
