Has anyone used "stretch denim" in their quilts?
I'm questioning the use of both stretch and regular denim together.

In the long run, I'm thinking it probably won't really matter...
but I'd like some reassurances one way or the other! :)

I'm using a cotton canvas upholstery grade fabric (a freebie) for the "windows" of the circles...
so there will be a stable/sturdy fabric in each circle.

They will not fray as much like regular cotton, and they are stretchier to sew :D:D:D

I find that with regular denim, if I use a half inch seam they don't fray as much....regular denim, that is. I have used the two together in a quilt..no problem. Have fun.

I hope you can use both..I have bags full that my kids have outgrown over the years. Not sure when they stopped using the real deal denim..but I'm going to use it anyway.. =)

I am currently making the same pattern. I use whatever denim I have. Stretch is ok. The only denim I think is too hard to work with is wrangler cowboy cut jeans. Dress denim works great. I went to Goodwill and found denim skirts, dresses, etc. for 99 cents. You can get yardage from these and they have already been washed.

I made that quilt and used stretch denim and regular denim, not problems as of yet.

Most of Mom's are of the stretch variety, thus my question about the stretchy stuff. :)

I made that quilt with my grandaughter when she was 13. We used all kinds of denim, making the back very interesting with all the different shades of blue. She is now 18 and off to college (with her favorite quilt) this Fall. We didn't use any batting and it is still heavy/sturdy.

I have started cutting out circles for this quilt but I keep forgetting to ask, do you need a special type of needle to sew denim? I read somewhere that you do or it will break the needle, thus why I haven't started sewing it yet.

You can get a 'denim' needle if you want, but really, all you need is a heavier gauge needle. The 70 and 80 gauge are just too delicate for the heavy fabric. You may also notice that you have to adjust your tension a bit, depending on the heaviness of the fabric.
