Another Dresden Plate Question
After you stitch the Dresden Plate and with center circle together and then applique it on your main fabric (Moda Snow) do you cut away the underneath fabric as in other applique so that it won't be too bulky? Or do you leave it as is?
Have read numerous articles on Dresden's lately, but none that answers this. Which do you do? |
I have done it both ways. If you are sending the quilt to a longarmer you may ask what she prefers
|
If you plan to hand quilt, you might like to cut away the extra fabric to make it easier to keep your stitches uniform. I don't usually if I plan to machine quilt it myself on a DSM.
|
Personal choice. I didn't and mine was hand quilted. Doesn't feel heavy either. No problems.
|
The thing you need to realize is that all of those Dresden seams are on the bias and it could stretch out if you are not very careful. I personally would leave the backing for support and stability.

I cut mine away on the four dresden quilts I made.
|
I never do just because I like the stability and also the extra layer seems to give a little more definition ( puffiness) when it’s quilted. i dont cut away behind any of my appliqué, it’s just me— I know many people do. It’s a personal choice, there isn’t a right or wrong. I just never take the time, when I’m done stitching I’m moving on.

I have always left the fabric under my dresden plates, though thought to myself it was a waste. I also machine quilt so the layers are no big deal and I'm going for speed. But it is a lot of fabric under there that could be used for another project.

I don’t cut it away and I have made many Dresden Plate quilts. I went to a lecture last week about Dresden’s and I am all fired up to make some more!

I don’t unless it is showing through.

I did not remove mine, but just want to share a nifty trick that I tried, and it worked really well. When you get your Dresden plate finished, and ironed nice and flat and ready to appliqué in place, take some small pieces of “Stitch Witchery” and iron the little pieces on the back of the tips of the Dresden plate. Now, when you get it all lined up on the background square, iron it in place with the “Stitch Witchery” dots. Holds it secure for hand or machine appliqué in place. I have also used “Elmer’s School Glue” to do the same. Good luck.

I leave the fabric on and haven't noticed it is any heavier than any other quilt.

I learned applique from Pat Campbell (and she was a fantastic teacher!). I never cut away the back.
