This is another quilt find. I work at the animal shelter and people always donate blankets and such, every now and then will get some hand made quilts in.. They say someone has passed and they found these in there home. I cant see letting dogs shred them... Not sure what this pattern is called?

I think it's called nosegay, but I always thought it should be ice cream cone. Pretty quilt, and you were right to rescue it.

Oh goodness, lovely quilt. you could hang it in the animal shelter to brighten it up but no, the dogs won't get to lay on it.

people who don't quilt are so dumb!!!!! that's why I told my kids when I die to donor my quilt to hospitals, nursing homes, shelters or museums. when I told this to them they said how about us do we get any!!! how cute

I can understand your wanting to preserve them-but I have to say I was very moved when we said goodbye to our Genna last year, she was sent over the rainbow bridge while being held and loved on a quilt at the vet's office. Maybe save those quilts after all.. Thank you for caring about them and the lost puppies and kitties

The quilt was donated to the shelter for the animals, perhaps the donor intended it to be used to comfort an animal. I also have had an animal pass away in my arms wrapped in a quilt that someone donated to the shelter. Of course the animal was wrapped in one of those blue pads used to protect a mattress. Our local shelter also holds garage sales twice a year. Maybe the quilt could be sold and the money donated to the care of the shelter animals. I volunteer at the shelter and it is so sad to see all the animals waiting to be adopted. I have adopted several and would take them all home if I could. Hubby says no more animals!

I'd go crazy trying to keep my dog and 4 cats off my quilts. :rolleyes: I'll put this as kindly as I can - Let the shelter auction it off or have it appraised and pay the shelter a reasonable amount for the quilt.

I have to agree. I would be very upset to find out that a quilt I donated to an animal shelter, nursing home, etc. went to an individual who works or volunteers there (not that volunteers do not work). We have a Goodwill store in our town that the former manager inspected all donations for her own use before things were priced and put on the floor for sale.

Carla, what a beautiful quilt. As someone who has made quilt donations, I have to agree that the shelter should benefit in some way from the contribution. I donated a quilt to a group that donates them to cancer victims/families and I was a little surprised to find it hanging in the local library for a raffle. The only reason I wasn't very upset was because the library is still a good cause to contribute to. But ... I have to admit that I had to think about it for a moment. Then, I bought tickets for the darn thing! LOL - Didn't win.

Ease up, people. You have no idea what compensation was given for the quilt......plus pups love their comfort but have NO aesthetic sensibilities.

Carla should keep the quilt! There is no sense in letting such a beautiful piece of art be "used up" by animals. They still are not people, and can't appreciate the beauty. Perhaps Carla has her own way of compensating the shelter for her find. She works there as a VOLUNTEER. Maybe she could make a simple quilt to be used at the shelter.

I think Carla should compensate the shelter for the quilt. I would want to keep it also, being a quilter and knowing what a find it is. Give a $50 donation and feel good about it. Or make a scrappy quilt to take its place or go to a store (even a second hand store) and buy a blanket and donate it in its place. Just do something. Otherwise, it's kind of like walking off with the merchandise.

Why don't you sell it, on ebay or craigslist or something and donate the money to the shelter

The OP did not directly state that she kept it for herself - for all we know, she took it home, washed it, photographed it for QB members, and brought it back to the shelter to be hung on a wall.

And if she did keep it, we don't know what she may have done to compensate for it.

This is kind of where I stand, too. Animals should be kept warm and comfortable but they don't care if it's a heirloom quilt or a new blanket. People do care. I applaud her for rescuing a beautiful quilt that someone worked many hours making. I think families often donate inherited things they don't personally want and because they don't know or appreciate the value of handmade items. But the items are treasures just the same.

I also do agree in burying a beloved animal in a quilt if that's the owner's decision. But that's an individual choice of a particular family.

Volunteers are generous with their love of the animals, and all the many hours they donate to them.. Consider this beautiful quilt a blessing to a quilter who also finds time to give from the heart.. Blessings...

I made a quilt for my daughter a few years ago and don"t you know when I made a visit who was laying on the quilt - yep the dog............ she did not get another one for a long time....................

We recently spend time at Patti's, a wonderful 4 star restaurant in Grand Rivers , Ky. They have a few animals in cages in their amusement park. On the concrete outside of the pot bellied pig's pen laid a pretty handstitched quilt. I am still sad that it's used this way.

Thank you all for the comments.. To settle some of the disagreements here, i work at the shelter, we do it cause we love animals, love to see them get a good home. Our shelter does have a yard sale every year, the employees and volunteers also put together a cook book. We have a contract with science diet and so that is the only food they feed there other then prescription food to some, or can food to ones to small for dry, or other issues... All the other food we donate to rangers pantry which then they distribute to people whom cant afford it... The blankets and towels come so often they donate some, but the tattered ones we cant use cause the dogs shread them the rest of way, then risk the chance of it blocking their intestines making it to where they have to have surgery to make it where they can go restroom. ( we had a 10 year old golden come in this way, that lived her remaining months in very loving home). So if it has holes they cant putwith animals.

The lady whom donated the quilt, said it was old tattered and she found it in her grandmothers home after she had past away, she said she had no use for it because it is tattered and old and figured the dogs would get a couple uses out of it. Before judge me on taking away from animals, just know we work there because we love being involved wiyh animals, and we always are making stuff for them, braided fabric ropes, fleece, scrappy blankets tacked together, bandannas to make them stand out more for adopters.

Heirlooms have no meaning to some anymore was the meaning of this post. Just because it is old and tattered,... We have numerous quilts donated and well used untilcan no longer hold together in wash. It was the way the lady told her story and protraid herself that was heartbreaking. I myself have lost a dog and we buried him in a quilt, that is not the issue to me it was the fact this was an heirloom and meant nothing to the lady, so we saved it from being destroyed by dogs like after about 3 uses of them getting thrown away.. This day and age is material things and it is sad, but never set in judgement of someone until knowing whole stories. I believe most every quilter if heard this lady would have done same thing in our shoes.. I told my husband the day this happened if he done that to mine id come back to haunt him lol. Sorry but if my grandmotjer or someone i knew put that much time into something i would cherish it always and pass down to my kids with the story behind it... Judge if you want but not before hearing or being there to see and hear.

So glad you cleared that up Carla. I think it’s great that your shelter gives the other brand of foods to the pantry. I always include a bag of dog, cat, and bird food when I donate to the local pantry. I hate the thought of someone having to give up their pet because they couldn’t afford to feed it.

I spent many hours cleaning out kennels at my local shelter. You couldn’t pay me to do this job, but I volunteer to do it for free. I think you did the right thing. Oops, I guess I was judging. Keep up the good work.
