Last year I found a lovely LQS close to work. I thought "how convenient" while DH mentioned that it could be quite the temptation. Well - no worries there because it closed shop last week. The owners retired and I wish them well. But.... Bummer!

So I was gearing up to take a trip to the other LQS in Sacramento. Tonight, as I was cleaning out my SPAM folder, I found an email from that store that they are out of business as well. The owner needs to take care of her health and I wish her well. But still... Double-bummer!

Now I went from Madquilter to Sadquilter.

Sorry to hear of your lost.

sueisallaboutquilts 01-10-2011 06:40 PM

Oh no!! That IS a bummer :(

chiaraquilts 01-10-2011 06:47 PM

Seems like there are fewer and fewer quilt shops, at least in this part of the world! Guess it is the economy/online shops, but how sad! I have one nice shop about 45 minutes away, after that is is 1 1/2- 2 hr drive...

jaciqltznok 01-10-2011 06:48 PM

unfortunately this will be the scene played out all across the country this year....too many online shops and not enough foot traffic in most places, and rising shipping, and other costs are not helping!

Candace 01-10-2011 06:51 PM

Crud. I hadn't heard that two local stores had closed! Major bummer indeed.

dakotamaid 01-10-2011 06:59 PM

Are you suggesting that I should open my own store? lol

I understand times are tough, but I can't believe a shop can't stay open in an area like Sacramento.

Sorry for the double whammy. Maybe someone will be inspired to open up a new store in that area and you'll be back in business. :)

quiltgrammyt2 01-10-2011 07:08 PM

That is a double bummer!!Hope you find another shop soon, because even with a stash we still need to have a fix now and then.

You'd think one closing so close to another would help one stay in business but illness makes it hard if you don't make enough to pay the help.

amma 01-10-2011 07:22 PM

(((HUGS))) What a disappointment :(

Lady Crafter 01-10-2011 07:24 PM

How very disappointing.

Bubblegum0077 01-10-2011 07:28 PM

I would love to open a quilt shop, but it wouldn't do well where I live.

Jaynie 01-10-2011 07:37 PM

I feel your pain....the nearest quilt shop to me is about 85 miles away. I load up when I get to go or when I go to quilt shows. But it would be nice to have one closer...like right now, I have run out of black civil war repro fabrics for quilt I'm working on and have to wait until I can make the trip for some more. Theres always online shopping when theres nothing else.

CarrieAnne 01-10-2011 07:51 PM

How sad!

franie 01-10-2011 07:54 PM

Oh sorry but there is always the Internet!

roseville rose 01-10-2011 08:27 PM

You must be talking about Quilters Stash in Rocklin? Have you tried Bearpaws and Hollyhocks in Sacramento or Quilters Corner in Sacramento. I live in Roseville and highly recommend both. Bearpaws is small but really has alot of fabric and great staff and Quilter Corner is fabulous too!

charmpacksplus 01-10-2011 08:31 PM

Thank goodness for all the great online quilt shops!

C.Cal Quilt Girl 01-10-2011 10:00 PM

Bummer....

Yeap. I'd have to agree.

Airwick156 01-10-2011 10:21 PM

Sorry about them closing shop on you like they did. I personally like to "see and touch" the fabric I buy.

kateyb 01-10-2011 10:43 PM

I have shopped a couple of times on-line but prefer to go to a store. I want to see the colors and feel the fabric. You can't get that on-line.
Fortunately there are 2 great stores near me.
I agree, losing 2 stores is a BUMMER.

Jim 01-10-2011 10:54 PM

closing of fabric stores is happening to often nowadays...when I moved here 6 yrs ago there were 3 quilt shops and Walmart...all thats left now is Walmart and luckily they are keeping their fabric dept...other than Walmart we have to drive 40 to 50 miles

susie-susie-susie 01-11-2011 07:26 AM

I am so lucky. There are about 10 quilt shops within 20 miles of my house--and I live in the country. On an 8 mile stretch of high-way there are about 8 shops with just a small jog off the high-way. I try to support the shop close to my house, as that is the shop that I like to take classes at. All of the shops that I have been to carry different styles of fabric and different books. A friend of mine and I plan to take a day and go to all of the shops, but not with winter weather. I also have a JoAnn's with-in 15 miles and my Wal-Mart carries fabric. How lucky can you get!!!

I feel your pain the one that was in our town closed ! It was not open long. :-(

annieshane 01-11-2011 08:54 AM

This is so sad. We have a fantastic LQS approx 45 minutes from me. However, EVERYTHING is outrageously expensive. The fabrics are beautiful to be sure and the shop is better than ...., but I just can't afford to pay double the prices for notions and tools, etc than I pay at Joann's and other places. I would so love to support the LQS more, but if they didn't try to double the prices on everything, they would certainly sell so much more. Not everyone can afford $9-$12/yrd for materials AND double prices for all the other items needed. I am so glad there are those quilters who can buy pretty much what they want, but so many are on more restrictive budgets. I do wish the LWQ all the success in the world, but just can't afford to go more than I do.

Does anyone know a website I can go to for a free Bargello pattern? It's not for a customer. The more I look at them the more I want one for myself.
