i am marking a border on my current quilt and needing to erase some pencil marks....THIS WORKED GREAT!!!!

sorry if others have already mentioned this - i just found this out!!!

amma 11-08-2010 04:46 PM

Well... that is an interesting way to use them :D:D:D It didn't bleach out any of the surrounding fabric?

Ladybug 1938 11-08-2010 04:52 PM

Becca what did you use to get it out...???????

117becca 11-08-2010 05:12 PM

i hand quilt and i always mark my quilts w/ just a #2 pencil...The lead markings actually eventually just wear off.

I got the idea from a quilt group that had the Mr Clean Magic Erasers sitting on the quilts - and i asked what they were for. The ladies told me they use them to erase pencil marks....

So - i had to try it tonite....W/ the quilt laying on a hard surface, you just rub the Magic Eraser over the markings and VOILA......pencil marks are gone!! I didn't even have to rub real hard!

They are great to clean the sole of your iron too.

117becca 11-08-2010 05:31 PM

that's good to know erstan...i was ironing a dust ruffle that i was making and got mess on my fabric!!

I LOVE my erasers!! So many uses for one little sponge!!

justwannaquilt 11-08-2010 05:47 PM

stupid question.....did you wet the eraser or just use it dry?

thats not a stupid question! i want to know too!
i love those little erasers!

alimaui 11-08-2010 05:51 PM

Just an FYI, there are some nasty chemicals in those, and they might not react well with the fabrics once it is washed.

watterstide 11-08-2010 05:59 PM

there are no harmful chemicals in the erasers..

http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/eraser.asp

but i would be curious to see what happens to the fabric after it is washed..

117becca 11-08-2010 06:05 PM

i use it dry....

117becca 11-08-2010 06:10 PM

i will also admit that the quilt top i'm working on now probably won't be washed....it'll lay on a bed and be treasured by by aunt and her kids as it gets passed down thru the generations.

SherriB 11-08-2010 06:11 PM

Thanks for the tip. I will try it and see how it works for me.

Spudgm 11-08-2010 06:34 PM

Thanks, I would not have thought to use the Magic Eraser.

littlehud 11-08-2010 06:39 PM

Wow, another use for them. They are the greatest.

hperttula123 11-08-2010 06:43 PM

That's great. I'll have to remember that one. I always use magic erasers to clean my walls(i have an artistic 3 yr old), scrub the floors, and anything else I can use it for.

Ladybug 1938 11-09-2010 04:52 AM

I have tried everything to get pencil out, Magic Eraser is on the top of my shopping list now...LOL Thanks for the heads up..

Me too -- and often had to give up getting those tacky pencil marks out

Does anyone know if the magic erasers will work on other types of pencils as well??

CarrieAnne 11-09-2010 05:36 AM

Thanks for the tip!

Nana2Sew 11-09-2010 06:43 AM

Thank you for the tip.
I will try it!

117becca 11-09-2010 07:05 AM

i would take a scrap fabric and try it. Hopefully, someone will go & experiment!! As i said earlier - i generally use just a regular lead pencil

Spring 11-09-2010 07:44 AM

wish I had seen this yesterday. I do heirloom sewing and always use a number 2 pencil for my marks.....used it on my quilt and I spent 2 days trying to wash that bugger out.

dphelps 11-09-2010 07:49 AM

Thanks loads for that tip. Could have used it earler too. I was cutting bias strips and inadvertantly marked the top side and not the back, then realized I had marked it wrong and then could not use the piece because I could not get the marks out.

They certainly are! I tried so many things before this... salt, vinegar, paper bags... the magic eraser was the only one that worked, and it worked without any real effort on my part.

featherweight 11-09-2010 07:58 AM

I have also used the magic eraser on my cutting mat to get the fleece off of it. I used it dry.

costumegirl 11-09-2010 08:13 AM

I'm going to have to experiment with this! Thanks!!

Me too. I have a baby quilt top sitting in a box because part way through quilting it, I realized the pencil marks would NOT wash out off one of the fabrics. I'll be buying a Magic Eraser today and giving it a try!

Tinabodina 11-09-2010 08:47 AM

Wow, this is great news. Thanks for the tip!
