Antique Quilt question

I have a very old quilt. Blue and white 8in squares. Tied. My dh wants me to retie some of the squares and put new binding on it. The binding is pretty much open all the way around. Still sewed on, but the edge is split. What is the right way to care for these old quilts. I got it from an old friend and we use it in the winter, and only washed it once. We use it, but so as no to get it dirty. Any advice is welcome.. Thanks

The Smithsonian vacuums quilts with a fine screen on the end. As for the binding you could remove the old .. lots of work .. or just apply a new binding over the old .. if its quite bulky and you don't want the hassle of removing the old depending on the pattern you could trim it off and apply the new.

I have no problem removing the old, if that is ok.

If it is antique, you may want to have it appraised before you do anything to it. I was told by an appraiser that sometimes repairs can ruin the value.
