Help! I have been folding my fabric and have discovered that I have way more fat quarters than I knew that I owned. So far, I have packed 4 plastic shoe boxes full and am still finding more. Any suggestions? First thing that comes to mind is to make a scrappy quilt, but I need more specific ideas. Can you help?

There are many books and patterns that show you how to quilt using FQs. Check out the Moda Bake Shop below with their yummy recipes for FQs:

http://www.modabakeshop.com/search/label/Fat%20Quarters

Me too have a box full of FQs and I'm wondering what to do with them. My objective now is to find suitable projects so I could quickly clear my stash.

Have fun! :)

Fat quarters are great! They make wonderful quilts. There's tons of free and $$ patterns for them.
My all time fav pattern is Yellow Brick Road. Sews up quick

So many patterns for scrappy quilts out there...it's really hard to make suggestions. Just start cruising the internet, and you are sure to find something you like that will suit your stash.

I use them in Project Linus baby quilts quite often as most of the ones I make for Linus tend to be scrappy and use squares interleaved with 4-patch or 9-patch blocks.
Or, if they aren't really baby-type fabrics, they can be used in "adult" scrappy quilts.

There are several quilts (different designs) called Turning Twenty where you use 20 fat quarters. I just love them. They are so easy. This is one of them I did for my DS and his wife. They have a jungle theme in their bedroom. Good Luck

I am making my first log cabin and it requires 20 fat quarters dark and 20 light. Maybe this is a good place to look?

Thanks for starting this. I only wish I had 4 shoeboxes full. I filled 4 sweater boxes and had to go with another method because I couldn't stuff any more into them.

I am still finding them!
You must really have a big stash of fat quarters! You win!
If you come up with any fantastic ideas, keep me in mind.

Tallulah 08-27-2010 08:27 AM

I am going to look for the Yellow Brick Road pattern. So many on this board have made it and love it. I have seen lots of Turning Twenty quilts, too. Had not thought of making a log cabin. Good idea.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Please keep them coming!!!

My fantastic idea is to use them in quilts and stop buying. I have slowed down my buying but haven't really stopped. I was looking for something under the desk where I make cards last night and found 20 more fat quarters down there. oops.

Fatty Fatty 2 x 4 is a great way to use up fat quarters. I have made 3 of them. If you look under "same pattern different look" you will find them. It's fun and easy to make.

SWEET!

Tallulah 08-27-2010 02:54 PM

This is made from fat quarters and is made from a free pattern that came in the mail. It looks like a 4 patch made from hst with white corners. Does anyone have the pattern and would share it? It works up really pretty. The name of the pattern is Cumberland. Check out this picture.

Yellow Brick Road is a pattern that's very fat quarter friendly.

They do look different. That looks very doable. Nice job on your quilts.

I should have so many!

Definitely use the Yellow Brick Road Pattern! She has lots of other nice patterns too. "Let's Do Lunch" projects use FQ's too. Have fun, and please post pics of your projects! :)

Yes, definitely scrappy quilts. Have you checked out Bonnie Hunts website http://quiltville.com/starstruck.shtml with many free patterns?

That is the pattern I am currently using to make a quilt with FQ. When you scroll down on the left there are many patterns under Scrappy Quilts.

What I also do is make a two tone quilt and just use all lets say blue fat quarters and all yellow fat quarters and then add a pretty border with blue and yellow in it.

Both the pink and purple based delectable mountain pattern from Quilt Ville

Hi Tallulah

I have completed a single quilt for my DD and was just about to start machine quilting. It looks somehow similar to the Cumberland pattern as the blocks are all made up of triangles. My scrappy quilt was made from FQs too. Only difference is, my quilt is presented in zig zag lines using light and dark fabrics. Pls see my attached photos. If you are interested, pls PM me and I will send u my pattern.

Vivien,
Love your quilt! I sent a PM to you. Thanks!

willferg 08-28-2010 11:53 AM

An FQ is a fat quarter, a piece of fabric 18" x 22", so it is more of a "square" quarter yard rather than a rectangular piece of 9" x width of fabric. Lots of stores sell them, so you can get a small piece of a fabric instead of buying yardage!

craftybear 08-28-2010 12:00 PM

I use fat quarters and made a disappearing 9 patch, was fun and easy

The series of books called "Laps from Fats" by Ellen Replagle -- there's about four different books and they all use fat quarters, layered and cut exactly the same way!

I love these books! The quilts produced are very scrappy looking and go together easily.

There's Laps from Fats, More! Laps from Fats, Laps from Fats for Family & Friends, and Star Savvy Laps from Fats.

Below is a picture of Star Whimsy from the Star Savvy book. I made mine a row bigger than the one in the book, but it called for 16 fat quarters (I used 20 -- 1 per block), some yardage for background and borders. What fun! I used my fq's and shopped my stash to finish it up.

There's several on my list to use up my all-too-huge collection of fat quarters, collected over the last 15 years of quilting! Sigh.

Blessings!
Mary Lou

Oh, I know what a fat quarter is - just couldn't figure out FQ. I getting slower and slower in my old age. Thanks! :?

My next quilt is going to be a 3,6 & 9 quilt by The Quilt Company PA it is very easy using fat quaters. I am working on 2 small quilts for my sister using light & dark HS. I will take a pic and post the one that I have ready to sandwich.
