NikkiLu: these patches are made to go on uniforms, so they are usually washed and dried often. The colors don't usually fade (unless uniforms are bleached), so they should stand up to being "quilt" washed (which is usually much gentler than uniform washing - because quilts don't usually have as much "guck" on them!)

My dad was a policeman, then deputy, then sheriff. I'll have to ask my mom if she has any of his badges for a project I'm working on, now that this thread has given me some ideas.

If they are all about the same size, I would just sew them onto a square of fabric and then sash them. If they were square, I would suggest the Shadow Box pattern.
