Any of the old time users still on here? From 20 years ago?

Way back there was a small group of us who would draw complex blocks to share and then we would construct those blocks using hand piecing and applique techniques. I miss that group. Anybody still here from that group?

You may be right, Patrice :) There have been so many changes over the years to the online groups. It seems the old group was called "Quilting Forum". Maybe I am confusing that one with this one. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

Stitchnripper 04-14-2024 06:20 AM

I think I got on sort of at the beginning. Many changes since then.

lindadee 04-14-2024 06:31 AM

Are there any groups on here specifically for hand piecing and or needleturn applique? I tried to find one by searching the categories, but I may have missed something. Any help appreciated :)

20+ years ago (around Y2K) I was active on the Sewing World boards that had a similar format and many sub-categories. My husband came into my life and while I was busy building a RL relationship, Sewing World closed down. About 10 years after the honeymoon, I found Quilting Board and was happy to have found something similar. It seems like I've been here longer -- I've certainly seen some changes in membership and remember many "old names" but according to my info, looks like I joined in 2018.

lindadee 04-14-2024 06:58 AM

I just looked at my account here and this is what it says for my join date: Join Date 01-18-2013 Since that is only 11 years ago, I am obviously thinking of a different forum :) Because of specific occurrences in my life, I know it was way longer than 11 years ago :) I live in a rural area and have tried locally to find people with similar interests, but have not had much success.

There are many that used to post here that i would love to be able to find on another forum..

When I joined there were quite a few that were banned and never knew why. Most came back under a new name and different email so still here but very few knew the veteran members by the new name. I was here before the new board change over. A lot of members left then. I know some posters who joined in 2006.

b.zang 04-14-2024 11:02 AM

I've been here since June 2008. I grew to feel like I really knew others and remember when the board creator shared the story about its inception. This forum has been my "guild" and most of what I know about quilting has been learned from members. I will always be thankful for the day I stumbled in and was welcomed into the fold.

Thanks so much! I will check them out :)

For some of us, an in person group is not realistic, so groups like these are a wonderful alternative :)

ElaineCovid 04-14-2024 03:04 PM

When I first joined (under a different name/email) there were quite a few folks who did hand applique, hand quilting, and such. They were wonderful artists whose work I really admired. Most if not all no longer post here.... I miss them!
I would love to see more of that type of work featured on here, much as I enjoy the work others share today!

Elaine, I would love to participate in a regular chat about handpiecing and applique and quilting. Is there a category for that here on the forum? If not, could one be set up so we can find it everytime we come here?

There are people that I miss their posts. There was an older gentleman from the west that posted beautiful pictures of quilts that he made.

ptquilts 04-15-2024 04:50 AM

I've been here since 2010. It was a revelation to see what people were up to. My DH and I did our quilting, never joined a group or guild. I was amazed at how many did machine quilting. I come from a background of hand quilting, simple machines, DH made his own patterns, and I repaired and washed antique quilts. I believe my first question was about hand washing a quilt, and everyone else was like, "Just throw it in the machine!".

I agree. There are people I miss. Ones who inspired me and who I learned from :)

When I started dabbling in quilting many years ago, I mainly sewed by machine. But in the last 20 plus years I have learned that my true love is handwork. There is nothing more peaceful than sitting and piecing or appliqueing by hand. I hand quilt, too, but it comes second to piecing or applique for me :)

LindaDee ... You've asked about specific places to discuss and perhaps somewhat to have a meeting of the minds, re hand piecing, applique etc. To find your "soul sisters"!! :)

That would be right "here" in the "Main" forum.
Simply, start a thread. Title it accordingly. And others will follow!!

Good Luck!!

Patricia Drew 04-15-2024 05:51 AM

Do any of you remember the Chat Room (Live Chat) ? I joined QB in 2016, I think, and it was so nice to catch up with fellow quilters ... you could usually find someone in the Chat Room at any time of the day.

Onebyone 04-15-2024 07:31 AM

The chat room feature was so nice! I do zoom meeting with a few quilters I met online. We sew, chat, show our work, show how to do something, whatever we like. Zoom is wonderful.

There isn't a specific sub category here that I know of, I think one of the admins could answer your question..... I think it would depend on how much interest/activity there is to justify it? I know the machine embroidery subcategory got started and now seems to have mostly fizzled out..

Is the Chat still available or did they do away with it?

That's discouraging when that happens. I know it takes effort on people's part to keep a topic going, but its value as a resource is worth it in my view.

I joined in 2010. Like many of you, this is the place I learned a great deal about quilting. I'm in and out of here depending on my schedule and how much I want to avoid doing something else!

Like some others, this was my first quilt guild. I've since joined two others (in person) and am a long term member of both. Sometimes I look up my old posts just to see what was going on in my life, what I was working on, etc. So it's like a mini-history of my life since retirement. I am always amazed at how much I've learned!

Patricia Drew 04-16-2024 05:10 AM

QB did away with the Chat Room a little while ago when they did some changes to the site. I don't think any explanation was given. I'm still in touch with several chatters via FB Messenger. We all miss the Chat Room, and wish it QB would bring it back!

You can see how long any of us have been on the board by our "join date" below our names and avatars. I thought this board began around 2010....

Too many of our original group are no longer with us because they have passed away. It's sad to read old threads and see their posts, chatting away. We miss them and are the richer for having known them, even if just for a few years.

What a lovely way to look at it. It IS wonderful to be able to read what others contributed years after they have left us.

The year 2010 was my first experence with this wonderful quilting board hope to have many more.

QuiltingNinaSue 04-22-2024 02:50 PM

I used to belong to a similar group, and international one as I recall before I retired, then found this one and have participated in several Farmers Wife quilts on board here, with Honchey, (?) Jeanie G., SewBiz, and others. Stopped quilting groups in middle of 50 Stars because of eye sight problems. Age keeps taking its toll, but finally getting logged back on here is great. Carrie was another one with the group back then. Memories are wonderful. I am still petting my fabric and taking care of husband Jerry. And feeling blessed to be able to take care of him.

Age really takes a toll on us, doesn't it. I tell my husband I want to "go" first, as I can't imagine being left behind without him.

QuiltingNinaSue 04-23-2024 06:15 AM

After 58 years together, helping one another I can greet each day with a smile. Another day to show my love for him, and do whatever I can to help him. I do enjoy it most of the times and know we all exit to the next level someday....and I hope I can care for him as long as I have him. I would love to find a good worker in the area that would help us out 16 hours of every month, but even with insurance paying $20 an hour, no takers yet,

Minnesewta-sam 04-25-2024 06:15 AM

I joined 4-28-2010, and although I don't post a lot, I try to check in once a day to see what's new. I picked the name because I'm in MN and my initials are SAM.
