Sometimes it's not the blade but the mat !!!!!! Sounds weird but they do get used alot.

Try using a section that doesn't get used much (far corner?) or turn over the mat (if it's a green one) and use that side. Usually no guidelines, but still a cutting mat! I hope it's just that one package... good luck.

Up4BigChal 11-01-2010 06:59 AM

Wow I haven't had any trouble either, The are so nice and sharp.

quiltlady37 11-01-2010 08:09 AM

I was told at the AQS show in Des Moines that hte HF blades will ruin your cutting mat. I haven't had any so I don't know this for sure, but they advised against using them.

june6995 11-01-2010 08:30 AM

Aw Come On! Ruin the mats, how? I can't see how they can ruin a mat any more than any other brand. They just want to sell their expensive blades and make money. Truth be told, we just "might" find out the same company makes them for any number of brands and for HF too.

Those blades have to be sharp to cut carpet backing. Think about it.

I won't buy into that one. They are just upset because they can't find them and save some money!

No problems with my HF blades. Love them and am waiting for more to come into stock at my local store.

I love mine

I thought that too and turned ALL four of them over thinking they only fit in one way, but they still skipped. I did finally open up another pkg. and the blade is FINE. I guess I just got a few bad blades. I was really feeling bad since I've given over half of them away and didn't want to give them (especially my Mom) bad product. I even tried the "bad" blades in my other cutters(since I have four different ones) and they skipped cutting in them too. I'll just dispose of them and use the others. I really CAN'T complain no more than I paid for them. I was just checking to see if I was the only one to have problems. If I continued to have this problem I was going to return them and get my money back. Glad no one else is having any trouble.

I just bought some HFT blades so that I could teach my SIL how to use a rotary cutter. The blade started skipping right away for her. When I used it, it wouldn't skip. I finally noticed that she was not holding the cutter in her hand at a 45 degree angle to the fabric. When I suggested that she raise the angle up a bit, she didn't have any trouble at all. Everytime she started to lower the angle of her hand, it would skip again.

I am sure that once in a while there will be a defective blade in a package. I have even had defective Olfa blades. At the price for an Olfa blade, I took it back to the Joann's and exchanged it. Fortunately, I had just bought it.

did you put the blade in your cutter? the cutter that you buy from them are worthless unless you are using them on carpet. I have had wonderful success with mine. there has been a couple of times that it didn't cut the fabric but that was user error not the blade or cutter.

I hope you didn't try to use the cutter on fabric. I bought the cutter and Blades as they didn't have just the blades. Opened it up tossed the cutter and am still on my first blade.

I'm still using the first blade, and its working great. I too had to buy the cutter to get the blade. I threw the cutter away.

BettyGee 11-01-2010 10:08 AM

A Colorado quilter here. I didn't know about getting blades at HB. My husband and I are HB fanatics. Just paid big bucks for five replacement blades for my Olfa at Jo Ann's. Feel like a total dummy, never thought to check HB, but perhaps I'll wait until the question of quality is resolved.

june6995 11-01-2010 10:34 AM

Why wait? at $1. per blade, (2 per pack @ $1.99) you might not find them later. They are "carpet cutter blades" if you phone and ask about them.

I have used one for several months and am getting ready to put on a new one. The first was wonderful. I sure hope the rest are.
Sorry you are having problems.

Quilter Day-by-Day 11-01-2010 11:04 AM

Had no problems with mine. They work great.

Suzy 11-01-2010 11:23 AM

Try cutting through aluminum foil a few times with those blades that skip, I've done that with the olfa blades when they act up and it seems to help. sometimes they can have something on that sharp edge that can cause a problem. Hope that will solve the skipping problem.

Good Luck

Suzy

quilting grqmmy 11-01-2010 11:37 AM

i also had that problem...i took the blade out and turned it around ..facing the other way.. had no more problem. try it and see if it works for you.

I had the same problem with other blades and found that it was me, not the blades. I had them in wrong. If you can. look at another cutter and see that is put on the same way. If that isn't it, check and see if you have two blades in there. some packages come in two to a set and they stick together so you don't realize there are two there.

cbuchanan 11-01-2010 01:21 PM

I ordered several packages when the original thread came out about them but mine have been on back order for months. Don't know when I'll receive my order. Hopefully, I won't have the problem you've experienced.

seweasy 11-01-2010 01:54 PM

Hi! I just spoke with my son in law who cleans carpets and does some repair, he suggested trying some of the wholesale carpet stores; places that sell the supplies for laying carpet. He thought their prices would probably be as good as HF and probably wouldn't have to wait because they would keep them in stock. Anyone who cleans carpet and does any kind of repair, they have to have the supplies, the cutters and blades
I got lucky when I went to HF today, and was able to find four packages of blades. Bought all they had!
I'm also going to check Lowe's and Home Depot because they sell the supplies for laying carpet. They might have them! Take care,Chris

poultney 11-01-2010 02:22 PM

I have been using them with no problems.

Connie in CO 11-01-2010 02:35 PM

I just switched my blade to the H/F one,no problem

19angel52 11-01-2010 02:57 PM

...I've picked up several packages - and so far they are great!

ekbuckeye 11-01-2010 03:27 PM

Wonder if it's just me and having trouble using a straight-handled cutter!?! My go-to cutter is an old, blue, curve-handled Quilters Rule cutter which the HF blades don't fit. I tried 3 pkgs of HF blades and they all skipped. Used in 2 different cutters on 3 different mats. Now I keep one in an old brown Dritz cutter for paper piecing.

wraez 11-01-2010 03:34 PM

So far my only problem is : they haven't arrived yet!

ordered in August and phone call to the company last week, told me that they'll ship Nov 18th. I was originally told they were shipping Oct 22nd.

No problem at all. They seem to last longer than the regular rotary blades. Also, after 2+ months my blade was getting a little dull, I had been doing a lot of cutting, including a lot of stiffy--put the blade in the sharpener and it was better than before. Love HF blades and love the price... Also, my DH and I can shop together at HF and I have found some really great stuff there.

dotlette 11-01-2010 03:38 PM

I have been using one since I have gotten them the first of October. I really like them.

BizyStitches 11-01-2010 03:49 PM

I've used 2 so far and NOT one problem at all. Sorry you are having problems. My suggestion would be to make sure you only have one blade in at a time. I know this can happen.. ask me how I know.

Mine was kind of oily also. I just run it through some scraps and it works great.

The oil is there to prevent rust, it is on the olfas and fiskars too maybe not just as much.

Marilynsue 11-01-2010 04:24 PM

I just went to HF for blades and was told that they had just ordered 100 blades and that 90 these were being held for a local carpet store. The manager told me that I was the second person that week looking for the blades and he wwas truley amazes. He said "we hardley sell any blades here and all of a sudden we have 3 customers asking for them in aweeks time."
He placed another order and allowed me to have some held in my name, and wheb I picked them up the price had gone up 50 cents on a package. Got a feeling we'll end up with a higher price in the futire. Hope not!

jitkaau 11-01-2010 04:43 PM

Have a check that it is not some lint on your cutting board that is causing he problem. I only suggest this because you say there is no nick in the blade. Often, if the cutting board is a bit old or not smoothed from lint, that can be the problem.

Lucy90 11-01-2010 04:48 PM

I have had no problems with the blades at all. I am so happy with them. Sorry to hear you are having a problem. I ordered mine and then found out we have a store about 80 miles from here. I go to Duluth often so stopped in and they had some in stock so I bought a couple more packages. Love them.

katiebear1 11-01-2010 05:06 PM

Mine have been on back order since mid Aug. Since they won't charge my card until they ship I told them I would wait until they were available. They had sent a card telling me I could cancel as it is taking so long.

Yeah, I keep getting a card from them pushing back the date of shipping.

cmilton 11-01-2010 05:25 PM

just took forever to arrive and I ordered 10 packs and received 9. called to report it and they said they would send missing pack but never did. they cut fine though.

garysgal 11-01-2010 05:31 PM

Have you tried using a rotary blade sharpener? It might sharpen the spot that is bad.

quilterfly 11-01-2010 05:44 PM

My sister bought the last bunch of blades at our local HF & I haven't tried them yet, but she says they're great. But don't use the cutter that comes with them, it's not meant for fabric I guess.

Abigail's Mimi 11-01-2010 05:51 PM

I bought one package and had the same problem of skipping.

I have had the same problem! I have used 2 packages with this problem.

Bev 11-01-2010 06:32 PM

The only problem I've had is that they've been dull right out of the package. I only bought two packages, wanting to try them before buying any more. I can't understand it because so many, many, people wrote to say they were razor sharp.

LadyCougar 11-01-2010 06:43 PM

I've been using one blade and it cuts beautifully - I really think it's sharper than the normal rotary blades we usually buy. I love them.
