Any quilting suggestions?

1 Attachment(s)
Hi there,

I've just finished piecing my second hexie quilt and am now thinking about how to quilt it! I'm kind of stumped at the moment and haven't managed to find anything helpful on Google, so I thought I'd ask for any suggestions on here as someone is sure to have a good idea :-)

I'm probably going to hand quilt it, but I haven't completely ruled out machine quilting! I'm not super at fmq, but I'm always willing to have a go!

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks!

WOW! That is gorgeous! I have no suggestions on how to quilt, but just wanted to say how beautiful your quilt is!

Tartan 07-15-2015 07:13 AM

Awesome! I think I might start in the middle of each swirl and SITD down the sides of the hexes. It should emphasize the pattern and I don't think you would need to stitch the cross seams. Boy that must have been hard to keep straight!

SHELTIE'SMAMA 07-15-2015 07:22 AM

Impressive and downright delicious. How big is it? Any idea of how many hours you have in it so far?

ptquilts 07-15-2015 07:23 AM

first suggestion - tell the dog it is not HIS!!! lol. I think I would hand quilt on each side of the "paths" that swirl through it. I have never seen a Hex quilt like this before - absolutely wonderful!!

Sisty88 07-15-2015 07:32 AM

Hahaha, it was pretty tricky to keep straight! Particularly after I'd had a couple of months break from it and then tried to get back into it!
No idea on actual hours, but I started it in November. I wish I'd made a note of exactly how long I'd spent on it, would be interesting for sure! It's about 60 x 90 so is perfect for my bed!
Thanks for the suggestion Tartan, I think that would work nicely and wouldn't overpower the design :-)

That is one gorgeous quilt. I love your colors. I would, also, follow the circular pattern of the hexie's. My second choice would be an all-over meander.

Amazing and beautiful!

joe'smom 07-15-2015 08:50 AM

That's so beautiful! (Your dog looks quite a bit like ours -- she's beagle/springer spaniel). How large are the individual hexies?

lynnie 07-15-2015 09:15 AM

beautiful, came to look at your quilt. I sent mine off to Charisma, i'll see what she does.
your quilt is stunning!!!

Yours is probably the most appealing (to me) hexie quilt I have ever seen. Love, love LOVE the spiral design. And I would emphasize that spiral with the quilting. Fabulous job!

WOW, What a beautiful interesting hex design. I would stitch in the ditch outlining the color band.

Latrinka 07-15-2015 01:57 PM

Absolutely gorgeous! I also agree with Tartan's suggestion, wouldn't want to take away from it's own pattern! Wow, what size hexies and how many? I've been addicted to hexies, but finally broke the cycle this past weekend, now I'm addicted to making biscuits for one of those puff/biscuit quilts! Love your quilt, sooo pretty!

Quiltngolfer 07-16-2015 04:51 AM

Awesome design! I've never seen that one before. To me, it begs for a spiral quilting design, or maybe a circular design.

Gail B 07-16-2015 06:14 AM

Absolutely stunning!!!! Love, love, love the design.

tucsonquilter 07-16-2015 06:15 AM

Beautiful!!! I did swirls in each hexie on mine. The hexies were 1". I loved the motion of the swirls and I think it would look awesome on your quilt.

tessagin 07-16-2015 06:19 AM

Stunning!! Love the color and design!! Poochie is cute!!

Sisty88 07-16-2015 10:35 PM

Thanks so much for all the quilty compliments! You've got me blushing over here!

That's a wonderful link QuiltnNan! I've saved it as I suspect I have more hexagons in me!

I'm definitely going to go with following the swirls to emphasise the pattern. I'm not sure about stitching in the ditch though, as the seam allowances are essentially pressed open! Maybe 1/8" in from the seams?

Tucsonquilter, I'd love to see a picture of your swirls inside the hexies!

I used 1 inch hexies on this one. I've also done a gfg and used 1 1/2" for that, I was amazed at the difference in size! I don't think the swirls would have looked as good in a larger hex as there'd hardly be any swirls! I have no idea how many hexies are in it, but the hexagon calculator I found said it would be about 1800!

WisWis 07-17-2015 02:38 AM

What a wonderful quilt-not sure about quilting.

jitkaau 07-17-2015 03:22 AM

How about feathers contained between the dark lines of hexies?

cpcarolyn 07-17-2015 07:00 AM

Beautiful quilt. Its there a pattern?

IBQUILTIN 07-17-2015 08:15 AM

That is so wonderful. What if you did a continual spiral? It would keep all that motion going that is in your quilt. Whatever you do is going to be magnificent

carolynjo 07-17-2015 02:06 PM

That is beautiful indeed! I have never seen one made like this, either. Enter in a show????

JustAbitCrazy 07-17-2015 02:40 PM

Your quilt is really stunning! I love the spirals! I have seen some Grandmother's Flower Garden quilts which were machine quilted with continuous curves in all the hexagons, curving from point to point all the way around each one. They looked beautiful. Maybe you could do that with yours.

chris_quilts 07-17-2015 06:07 PM

Love the Springer Spaniel quilt police. Love the colors in the quilt too. I would quilt it as Tartan and several others suggested keeping with the swirl effect.

earthwalker 07-17-2015 06:26 PM

Firstly, it is stunning. I too have never seen hexies put together this way. I would be inclined to keep with the spiral concept. This is very show worthy....so enter it somewhere, it deserves it!

annette1952 07-17-2015 06:29 PM

Sorry,no idea on the quilting but wanted to say your quilt is just gorgeous. That one was a lot of work to say the least. Job well done!

misseva 07-17-2015 07:30 PM
