Hi fellow QBers-
I just bought 2 yards of the following Michael Miller fabric to make a extra long twin size quilt for my 13 year old grandson's room.
I like the large scale print, and I could even use it as a panel. I thought about using a "piano key" border that really looks like piano keys. His walls will be tan and he wants music posters displayed.
Any ideas?

this is about a 12 square

coordinate I found online

Love the fabric and can't wait to see what others come up with. As for me, I have nothing. :-(

I would just do 12" squares.... put sashing to left and right, then strips between them top and bottom in coordinating color...tan, gold, grey??

Then do the piano key border around the sashing and done! Simple, quick, and makes good use of what you have without too much detail. If you feel ambitious, set the blocks on point.

I've done a lot of charity quilts with this "pattern" and folks seem to really like them. The pattern makes good use of busy fabric.

You're so funny - thanks for popping in, though!

We use that simple pattern for our prayer quilts at church, too. I really like the idea of placing them on point :) It would add a little interest. I have to remember that it's for a 13 year old boy - he's not going to care about the pattern!

Your plan sounds great. Lucky guy!

Buy one more fabric and do this. http://www.maryquilts.com/quick-strippie/

Nice fabric! How about a ten minute block? Here's the link-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbTHlGGKMPM You could use colors from the first fabric in a blender or small print as your center in the ten minute block. Please keep us updated and pics when its done , please. :-D

You might want to consider picking up on that light blue, just a little, like a thin folded inner border, then the piano keys. I think it needs a little contrast. Good luck.

What awesome fabric. Whatever you decide it is going to be great.

I like the stripes. I do have a chocolate brown piece and a tan piece I'll probably use.
I just want to determine a pattern first, then I'll fill in what I need:)

I agree -I could even use the light blue as the piano keys -
as I said, I need a pattern first:)

Like all suggestions too!

Flying_V_Goddess 07-07-2011 09:30 PM

I'd go with the 12" blocks. Maybe a piano key sashing? Sheet music border?

blueangel 07-08-2011 03:04 AM

I would go with the 12" blocks also.

gramma mo 07-08-2011 07:12 AM

I am going to use 12" blocks - thanks for the input. I think I'll use chocolate brown sashing and light blue corner stones. The coordinate can be a border between the piano keys. I just have to go get more quitar fabric - 2 yards isn't quite enough for a x-long twin that goes over the sides:)
Enjoy your day!

I am pretty much a newbie so don't really have any pattern suggestions. But as a parent of teenage boys(now in there twenties but still boys ;)) I think the material is super. And that guitar material will be important to him. So maybe something with really big blocks to showcase that material. You could maybe even stitch around the guitars to make them standout when you quilt it. You have my mind working now. One son loves his rocking music and that material would make him a happy quilt guy. Have fun!

I agree that I want to use as much of the fabric as possible. I love the idea of quilting around the guitars - hadn't thought of that. I think I have everything I need to start - so wish me luck. I'll post pictures when I get the top done :) His birthday is the 23rd - what do you think my chances are of finishing?

soccertxi 07-08-2011 03:13 PM

I think I have seen fabric that looks like piano keys. That would save a piecing step! how about Warm Wishes?

I like this suggestion. It will highlight the quitar print

Thank you! I have a pattern similar that we call "box lunch". We use it as a lap size quilt for our quilt ministry:)

TanyaL 07-09-2011 07:31 AM

I would use the fabric as a large panel and then use a neutral color (blue or tan) in large blocks around it and applique some of the instruments over the blocks and applique some of the words. I would use the fabric with the words as a wide border. I doubt if the boy is interested in the pattern but will fall in love with the visual of the intact instruments on the quilt. I would make matching pillowcases for him. instruments with a border of words or the neutral color with a border of words.

Well, I started the top, but have to wait for the coordinate with words to come in the mail. I'll use it for a border, and a sashing down each side to separate the top from the part hanging down the sides of the bed.
Tanya - I like the idea of a pillow case, and I have enough of everything to do that. I also have a tiny chocolate brown/tan check to use. I used it as the little corner stones, and there is a pillow sham to match.
I'll post a picture of what I got done so far.

I love my design wall that I bought at JoAnne Fabrics. BUT - the cheap $2 vinyl table cloth I hung up next to it works JUST as well!!!

This should surely be a quilt he will treasure all of his life. Good job, grandma.

What about the shadow box quilt that has been on here lately? You get some fabric with some of the color from the guitars. It would be really pretty.
