Any tips for collage quilts?

I just watched a little video and will pick up some Pattern Ease to draw whatever form I decide on. Has anyone made a collage quilts and do you have some dos and don'ts and tips for a beginner?
Maybe you could post a photo of your quilt? That would most likely be the greatest of inspirations. :)
Thanks!

My advice would be to take your time, audition anything that you even remotely think will work - and more importantly have fun.

I just made the flamingo and it was fun. I used a sharpie to trace my pattern onto the pattern ease and it showed through under my white so next time I will use a pencil. I’m trying the mermaid next. Enjoy

My tip is to use Steam a Seam 2 Lite, as it has a sticky back quality that lets you stick your pieces on to see how they look and even reposition them before you iron them down. I also did mine on my design wall, rather than on a table, Found it easier that way for me.

where do you find these patterns?

Chester the bunny 02-09-2018 07:35 AM

Oh those are so pretty.
Thank you for the tips. Thank you Watson, I didn't know there were 2 different kinds of Steam a Seam, love all the blues. Imanna, I love how you used sea themed fabric for yours, it makes it so fun.
Thanks for the google inspiration QuiltnNan

Here's mine.

Well, that is just adorable!! I'm signed up for a Laura Heine retreat in June to learn this technique. I'm a bit intimidated, but so intrigued too. I've picked Abeline, the steer for my project. Can't wait!

ka9sdn, you can find inspiration anywhere....The horse was actually a sculpture made out of ceramic tiles that I once saw on the internet.

I've also done collages from stained glass windows.

I suggest you take a picture of you piece once it is laid out and check for holes or colors that stick out before you iron.

Glassnquilts, thanks for the idea of taking a picture before completing! I love both of your pieces but especially interested in your seahorse. That is the pattern I have and have begun gathering fabrics for him. Really like all of the sea shells you used and the little sea creatures! Great work.

These quilts shown are awesome. It's on my wish list to try...It looks more artistic than I'm capable of so I've avoided it for now. Looking forward to seeing your creations...

I made the owl from Laura Heine's work for my granddaughter and enjoyed doing it. It turned our nicely and she loves. I would like to do some more in the future. My quilt guild will have a workshop later this month based on the work of another collage artist. I am thinking about doing that one.

Lucky you...I’m sure it will be a fun retreat. I haven’t done a collage project yet, but it is on my 2018 list of trying something new to me. You’ll have to share your experience after your June class.

Here's mine based on a colouring book drawing.

Wish I knew how to post pictures/ I did a Pink Flamingo and I did a bear. The bear I did in puzzle pieces for my daughter. She collects bears and my granddaughter is Autistic. Covered both bases.
