Any tips for mending a t-shirt like quilt?

I agreed to mend a quilt for a friend. It was made from knit polo shirts that belonged to her brother who passed away several years ago. The quilt is very 'well-loved'. Luckily, it was a tied-quilt, so unassembling it should be fairly easy (snipping the ties). It doesn't appear any type of stabilizer was used, so I may end up even unassembling the entire top and using a fusible stabilizer. Luckily, the backing doesn't have any sentimental value, so I can replace it entirely.

Any suggestions? Am I going about this the right way?

Thanks in advance!

Those can be very challenging projects.

I think it depends upon if the fabrics are worn out or if the seams are coming apart. Worn out fabric, especially knits are hard to stabilize, they ravel. If it's just a matter of taking it apart and restitching, your idea of stabilizer is good. You are a good friend to do this. It will take time and patience.

Your suggestions sound like the way to go.

Stabilize the t-shirts, I have made several of these quilts and they come out better with stabilizer. Remember to put the stabilizer cross wise with the t-shirt, t-shirts stretch around your body so the stabilizer should go the other way.
