Any way to clean Sharpie off of a cutting mat?

I told my son he could use the cutting mat area to wrap presents on the dining room table. I discovered that he had used a Sharpie to make tags and it bled through to the mat. Is there any way to clean this off?

feline fanatic 12-18-2015 07:21 AM

Try rubbing alcohol. I don't know if it will work. It does take sharpie off of plastic though, so maybe??

PaperPrincess 12-18-2015 07:35 AM

The same thing happened to my mat, except I did it, so I can't blame anyone. It was 5 years ago and I haven't been able to get it off, however, it doesn't hurt the mat and it doesn't rub off on fabric, so I've learned to live with it.

dluvs2quilt 12-18-2015 08:07 AM

Try nail polish remover.I know it works on plastic.

lovingLakeMich 12-18-2015 09:02 AM

Thank you! This board is the best. The rubbing alcohol is what I tried first. It definitely lightens it. I think I'll let him work on it too since he feels bad about it!

Use dry erase marker over original. It will take off most if not all

Onebyone 12-18-2015 12:51 PM

My DGD scribbled all over the middle of my large Olfa mat with a Sharpie. I didn't even try to remove the marks as I knew nothing would remove it completely. I bought a new one and took that one to my guild's free table. A member bought it and cut it up to make tote bottoms. So it was put to good use. I could have turned it over but didn't want to and no one at guild wanted a turned over mat either.

ManiacQuilter2 12-18-2015 12:56 PM

That is why Sharpies are labeled as permanent markers. It shouldn't effect the use of the mat. Some mats you can flip over and use the other side.

SuziSew 12-18-2015 01:07 PM

Try one of the "magic erasers" I've used it on other things with a lot of success.

Tothill 12-18-2015 02:02 PM

Alcohol based gel hand sanitizer can work wonders at getting permanent ink off a variety of hard surfaces. I discovered that when I got to work on morning an the colour ink jet printer had leaked all its ink all over my desk.

We tried just about everything, when I decided to try the hand sanitizer. It took up all the ink. There was not a mark left on my desk.

As a school teacher, this works for sharpie marks on white boards. I would give it a shot!

Gmacher 12-18-2015 04:43 PM

My granddaughters have used hair spray to remove sharpie marks from my table.

I've also used this on leather purses!

paoberle 12-19-2015 04:26 AM

Try WD-40. It works on almost everything.

BETTY62 12-19-2015 05:08 AM

Try spraying it with hairspray, let it set a few minutes and rub with a damp cloth.

lovingLakeMich 12-19-2015 05:38 AM

Thank you all for taking the time to help me. It is much appreciated.

sewnsewer2 12-19-2015 05:54 AM

Try a mr. Clean magic eraser.

carolynjo 12-19-2015 06:43 AM

Have you tried using a Mr. Clean scrubbie? I use them for just about everything with good results.

Cbeumer 12-19-2015 07:07 AM

Try hairspray.

Love2Craft 12-19-2015 07:57 AM

Careful with this idea, nail polish remover will melt some plastics! Test on an edge first!

Delilah 12-19-2015 01:32 PM

Hair spray or WD-40. I know WD-40 takes permanent ink off a lot of things.

Girlfriend 12-19-2015 07:37 PM

So, did it come off?? Curious minds want to know!

And if so, what took it off?

Donna Bates 12-20-2015 05:35 AM

melaleuca's sol-u-mel stain remover. I've used it for years on ink and sharpie marks...good luck.

betty32084 12-20-2015 05:38 AM

try some hand sanitizer - I use it on my dry erase board , leaves it very clean.

Mitch's mom 12-20-2015 06:05 AM

91% isopropyl alcohol will take it right off. It is sold right beside the much weaker 70% regular alcohol. About 1.00 a bottle.

A slightly damp Mr Clean Magic eraser works wonders. Has to be the original one though.

tessagin 12-20-2015 08:39 AM

Yes, I totally agree. Nail polish remover is a whole different kind of remover.

Please let us know what method/solution worked best!

lovingLakeMich 12-20-2015 11:32 AM

Truthfully, there are still faint marks after the rubbing alcohol treatment. It's a huge improvement. I will try some of these other suggestions....after the 25th. I've been ill so everything is behind schedule. I didn't want to ruin the surface of the mat or use something that would mark fabric. Thank you to all of you for your ideas.

Becky's Crafts 12-20-2015 01:45 PM

I make a paste with baking soda and vinegar. So far it's taken marker off everything I've used it on!

MarshaHarrison 02-09-2023 07:56 PM

You can try rubbing alcohol or acetone-based nail polish remover. Start by dabbing a little amount of rubbing alcohol into a cotton cloth to remove permanent marker from a desk. To remove the residue, lightly dab the area to moisten it. Then, using a wet towel, wipe the area clean. If a small mark remains, simply repeat the procedure.

I'm sorry but PLEASE understand I was awake for almost 48 hours when I posted the above. I must have been more out of it than even I knew at that point. Again I'm sorry.

thimblebug6000 02-10-2023 01:18 PM

This post is from seven years ago, I doubt the poster is still looking for an answer.

KalamaQuilts 02-11-2023 06:51 AM

there was a spam post that revived it. It was removed.

Acetone will take sharpie off. I mark my machines with sharpie and it comes off every time. Also removed sharpie from the edge of rulers. Many more things.

Now I know what to do with all those bottles of hand sanitizer I bought when we were in the height of the Covid pandemic. I still use it but have about enough to last 3 years at this rate!
