I feel your pain. I have been staring at my fabric I bought for a bargello for almost a year. I keep trying to rethink my colors. I was just thinking maybe I should do the local shop hop this weekend and try to find some new colors.

You really have to go with your gut when choosing fabrics, but I agree that some that seem "oddball" can end up being the ones that give the quilt the most interest and movement. Without seeing your collection of blues there isn't much advice we can offer except to encourage you to 'trust your instincts'!

Your quilt maybe casual but your search for the right fabrics is definitely not :)

Kinda reminds me of a now deceased friend. She loved blue. But problem was, once we were in the fabric store, she would pick up so many with a teal look. Ask me if they were blue. When I would tell her they looked kind of teal, she would put them back> I suggested she just get what she liked and not worry about whether it was true blue or not.

Running back and forward as you did is not me BUT I am terrible at purchasing a set of fabrics for a specific project. A few days later doing another project and oh that fabric is just right. And slowly my initial set disappears and when I come to do that project no fabric left off to buy more.
I see so many brilliant ideas on here I must make NOW is the reason It happens. Keep giving me ideas I love it and the. Shop is a 20 minute walk away. So it keeps me fit. |
Oh boy, do I EVER identify with you on going back and forth to the store for more fabrics! My quilts end up costing WAY too much because I keep changing out fabrics. I'm making a Tropical Rainbow, and I did that very thing - even cut strips out, so in the scrap bag those go. I'm on the borders now - wanted more colors, so dug through my stash. Still wanted more colors, so off I go to my neighbor's house to look at her stash. What a wonderful quilting neighbor I have...she gave me six or seven pieces for my border...I think I'm just about there...

Yes, always have to go and get more...no matter how perfect my plans!!

I TOTALLY GET IT! I've done this too! I tried taking swatches to the store with me, but that can get real unhandy. And I hate cutting into any fabric until I'm sure I want to use it. Now, I go to the paint store first. B4 I buy any fabric, I choose a bunch of their paint color cards that I like together. Then I take that to the LQS and stick to what's on the card (s) as close as I can. I don't get as many fabrics that way, but I also don't spend quite so much $ on gas instead of fabric. And I end up with colors that really look good together.

I guess that's why they call it the blues! :p Sorry, Neesie - couldn't resist. And yes, that seems just like something I could have written while gathering fabrics for a quilt, especially the part about noticing the good finds for a different project.

Same problem. I finally got a small folding ott light at Joanne's to carry with me to check the hue, which looks different under the fluorescent lights. Why don't fabric stores have an ott light station set up to check colors?

Just seeing how many trips you made back and forth made me exhausted. Called DH and reminded him it was chicken night. Too tired to cook after reading your post. Gonna have a conversation with "Bud" and wait on the chicken. All this for a casual quilt. Hope you find the purple you want. Take photos of the material you have that should help you choose the purple tones. I'm thirsty.:)

BTW, two of my "new" purples (for future purple paisley set) are identical to two already in that set. Have decided to take pictures of all the fabrics, with my phone. MAYBE I'll remember to look at them, before buying more. :p

Neesie must be young....full of energy. That is why I started purchasing kits.........someone else made the decisions . Calla

Yeah, I could just put the two sets together. With that many different shades, it wouldn't matter so much. If this new blue doesn't work out, I may do that. Thanks for the idea!

Sometimes I get caught up in that kind of cycle, too, Neesie. And then I suddenly find myself losing interest in the whole project. Your mention of the purples, for instance. I'd probably put those blues aside for now and do the purple quilt instead and then go back to the blues. If I force myself to keep doing something that gives me problems, I dislike it more each time I work on it. For something that, for me anyway, is essentially a hobby, that feels like a contradiction in terms!
