I am a dye-a-holic!
I can hardly wait for it to warm up for more than 6 hours so that I can haul my stuff out and get to making some HOT new fabrics.
I have some I want to over dye!

in the early summer I usually go down to TX to my sister's farm and we dye about 50 yards of fabrics....we have folks come by with their fabrics and we go at it for about 4 days straight!

I first fell in love with fabric dying back in my early GS days..then as a camp counselor we always did tie dye...then in the SCA we dyed for our garb..now I just love to create my OWN blenders, marbles, etc...

emptyshellamy 02-21-2011 07:14 PM

Me too, I just bought some fabric to dye (as soon as I finish the latest quilt, lol). I've done it all too & taught some local classes. It's a lot of fun :)

Dyeing is fun for all ages! I have pics here somewhere of dyeing with a friend and our gaggle of toddlers. Me explaining the rainbow fingers for days after is pretty funny too

Emptyshellamy,

Very nice blog! Thanks for sharing.

MaryStoaks 02-21-2011 09:13 PM

Looks like you had fun! I have only dyed completed quilts with tan Rit dye. I did it because when finished I thought the quilt was too bright, it did make them better.

Halfsquare 02-21-2011 09:36 PM

What type of fabric and dyes do you use?

debbieumphress 02-21-2011 09:43 PM

GOsh it looks wonderful. I have not attempted it before because I don't know anyone who does. Just getting together in the country would be fun. By the way, I do live in the country is anyone wants to dye. I have fabric. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Pickles 02-21-2011 09:53 PM

Looks like lots of fun :-D

I bought dyed fabric on here before and have them on a shelf where I can find them now. Haven't decided how to use them yet. Kind of like when we used to tie dye our t-shirts back in the day. Maybe they will sell some on here one day. Those of us who don't dye, buy. ROFL

pookie ookie 02-21-2011 09:58 PM

I used to love doing it. Hopefully, I'll have time for it again.

Love the pix.

twospoiledhuskies 02-22-2011 05:54 AM

emptyshellamy 02-22-2011 05:57 AM

Inspired by this thread I'm dyeing some right now & writing a quick "anyone can do it" tutorial with pics :) I'll post back tomorrow with a link when they're done. Thanks to Jacquie for bringing this up, I really missed dyeing & am having fun this morning (and avoiding a pile of housework, lol).

I use cotton fabric, muslin mostly, that I wash in synthropol and then soak in soda ash. Then I dry it and put it away til it is time to dye it!

I do the prep part in the winter!

I use Procion MX dyes.

nycquilter 02-22-2011 08:52 AM

me too...LOVE LOVE LOVE dyeing my own fabrics...and the hand of the fabric is wonderful. I want to use up my stash (good luck) to whittle it down only to hand-dyes!

do you over dye some of your stash?
I do..I especially love to dye white on white prints...

I have taught dyeing, painting, marbeling, and inking on fabric for years, and I still learn new things....if you ever need anything let me know..I keep plenty of supplies on hand to sell to students.

I do a little fabric dying, and plan to get into in a much bigger way when it's a little warmer outside!

I tried that way once (prepping) and dang what a MESS I had, LOL. It's really cool to see how other people dye (hint hint) ;)

Here are a couple of quilts that I used my hand dyed fabrics in as an important part of the quilt.
Maya's ribbons was made to show off the dyed fabrics.
April showers was a guild challenge where we had a FQ of the blue polka dot print and I dyed the fabrics to match the colors in the dots...would you believe not one person in the guild "got it"....

Just the last couple of weeks I tried snow dyeing. It is interesting and I like the way the fabrics come out but don't know if I'll do anymore, at least this winter, unless we get another big snowstorm. I love batiks and this fabric has that marbled look.
Jacquie your quilts are spectacular

yes, I have...I lived in Alaska before I moved to Ok..and even in OK we do get snow

emptyshellamy 02-23-2011 05:15 AM

I've never heard of snow dyeing, sounds cool! I've done it with shaving cream though

I did a quick, simple tutorial yesterday for my blog. This (in my opinion) is about the easiest way for a first-timer to try dyeing.

http://quiltndyenstuff.blogspot.com/...lt-fabric.html

Hope it inspires someone to try it & move to more advanced methods

jaciqltznok 02-23-2011 06:30 AM

No way?! I know both areas well! I lived in Collegeville for a while, now in Reading. I'm from Tulsa originally, lived in the Elgin & Ft Sill area in highschool.

my ex was Navy stationed at Willow Grove air base in the early 80's! I worked Lansdale house of fabrics while we lived there...learned so much about the business, fabrics, etc...I started out as an assistant to the interior decorator..then moved to sales in home decor...I really have the fondest memories of that place and the people!
