I want to make a tree skirt this year but I want it to be super simple. Hubby is sick of all of my quilts so I want to just cut this gorgeous fabric I have into a circle or sort of and quilt it...any suggestions on how to get a shape?
I made mine a square and made a large LaMoyne Star (the fake one with squares - smile) and it is beautiful. Don't have picture here sorry.
If I were doing it, I would quilt it first and then cut it into a circle shape and bind it. You could cut it first and the do the inside out method and then quilt.
I bought prequilted Christmas fabric double sided, folded in half and made a semi circle and cut it out. It is about 18" wide and then I just turned over the edges and hemmed it down. This way you can cover the stand and have some left for the gifts.

I am thinking about using something someone on here showed me. An octagon.Simple yet elegant. And then I don't have to cut up my favorite fabric. win win.

The pattern I am trying to make is not working yet, but here is an easy one:

Most I've seen to purchase are 36, 48 or 54 inches. I would use a yardstick to determine how far you want your tree skirt to surround the tree.
The one I made I just took a square of burgandy velvet and a matching size square of shimmery Christmas plaid and cut the two of them into a circle, cut one side half way to the middle and cut a small circle in the center for the tree trunk, added gold trim around the outer edge of the circle (stitched into the seam so it would show whichever side was up) and that's it. I did not quilt mine, as I made it before I started quilting. Took maybe an hour or so.
I did a similar thing that others have done. I bought quilted and non quilted fabric. I cut my circle, then cut strips from the non quilted. I gathered the strips and made a ruffle for the edge of the skirt, then bound the edges with the remaining strips. I top stitched the seam where the ruffle and skirt meet to keep it from turning over.

Take a pencil and a string the lenght of the radius you want. Pin the string to the middle of the fabric you have and stretch the string and pencil out to mark a circle. Find a simple design and piece it into a square before marking and cutting. |
