I had my Gingher's sharpened and they are just like new. Had a lot of my smaller ones done too when a man came to the quilt shop close to me. He did a really good job on them.

georgiat 10-12-2010 04:02 PM

There is a gentleman in Texas known as "the scissors guy " who goes to shows and does this. he did an excellet job on everypair I took him from old and cheap to gingher and expensive.

MsSewer 10-12-2010 04:42 PM

My LQS offers this service. However, they send them out. It was relative inexpensive but I was without those scissors for about a week. Do you have any back up scissors?

FroggyinTexas 10-12-2010 04:46 PM

Send Ginghers back to the company. They'll come back like new. Most local sharpeners are wonderful, but before I would trust my Ginghers to them, I would have them sharpen scissors I didn't value so much.

As you can see, I'm very protective about my toys.

This is not true if they are done correctly. My DH keeps my scissors sharpened and he does a wonderful job. He also took a pair of my smaller Fiskars and shortened the blades to about 1" in length and put a new edge on them. They are terrific for cutting rag blankets. He says with short blades and a long handle you don't have to squeeze the handles together very hard to get a lot of force applied to the blades. Whatever the reason, it really works. He also sharpens scissors for the members of our quilt guild.

You can't go wrong if they are sharpend by a professional. Off course they will alway go dull again. Nothing stays sharp forever, even us unfortunately.

After buying my third pair of Ginghers in 5 years, I decided to take the neighborhood barber up on his offer to include them when he has the shops scissors sharpened. They came back like new!

Wish I had read this before I had mine sharpened. Took them to a 'tool sharpener' as I live in a small town in central FL and we have NO traveling sharpening service that I'm aware of that comes here and offers scissor sharpening. I've replaced those original scisssors and when a pair gets dull, I just get another pair. I hate wasting the money, but a half tank of gas to go and come to the nearest JoAnn's doesn't make sense either.

Gingher have a sharpening service for their own brand of scissors.

I ALWAYS send my Ginger's back to the factory. Some of the others just butcher them. I send my Cutco kitchen knives back to the factory, also. Have a whole set and they are 47 years old and perfect. It usually about $3.00. I have taken them to the Houston Show and they have several guys there, but usually don't take my Gingers.

Ardelle, thanks for the information. I just Googled Gingher and printed out the address and information I need. Thank you very much - never thought about that. Having a "duh" moment.

Peggy, I also have Cutco knives and love them, but never thought about sending them to Cutco for sharpening. Will give that a try. Thanks for the information :-)

Shequilts - big hugs to you for starting this thread! I have a pair of Gingher shears that I can't use because they are so dull, and I never used them on anything but fabric, so don't know how it happened. Now, I look forward to having them perform like new. Thank you so much. Thanks to you and the others who responded, I also plan to have my Cutco knives sharpened for the fist time in about 25 years. I'm so excited! Thank you, Thank you.

judi wess 10-13-2010 03:49 AM

Dahling, the one doing the sharpening makes all the difference.

marmalade 10-13-2010 06:10 AM

Please get a "pro" to do it and DO NOT, I repeat - DO NOT mention it to your (well actually, my) husband! He dragged out the knife sharpener and proceeded to sharpen my sewing shears and my kitchen shears. I know he was trying to be helpful (being retired and all), but I am now in the market for new kitchen and sewing shears as neither pair will even cut a piece of paper......sigh
Thank goodnessI love to shop - lol!

pc1camp 10-13-2010 08:29 AM

Brenda, they will resharpen and if anything is wrong that that does not help, they will replace it at no charge. Get on the web and find their address. I just wrap them well in newspaper and pick in box or take to one of the wrapping mailing places and let them box. They will be as good as new.

Peggy

Sounds like your DH is very talented. From all the responses to this thread he could have a successful side business.

Busy Lizzy 10-13-2010 02:19 PM

Hi, When you mail your sissors back to the company do they tell you how to package them, so that the point doesnt come thru the [packing.

This is good to know.... I was wondering if I could have the pinking shears sharpened. THANKS!

I think if you send them to Gingher they will sharpen them for free You will need to pay postage. That has been their policy in the past. give it a try.

I have a knife/sissor sharpener for my kitchen, used it for my sissors and it works great. The sharpener is one you hold in your hand, looks like a handle, EASY to use. Try this site, mine is the yellow one. My husband gave it to me as a gift, I think he got it from Lowes or HDepot for between $6 and $10. I use it a lot. Shop around it is well worth the price. you can do it yourself for the rest of your life. http://www.accusharp.com/

I've had my Ginger's sharpened twice now and have had them over 25 years, same for my pinking shears. They hold a sharp edge great and for a long time as long as you take good care of them and only cut fabric.

Bam 10-14-2010 04:31 AM

I sent my Ginger scissors back to the company for sharpening and have been very satisfied with the results. There was a charge for sharpening and shipping but well worth the price. You can Google Ginger repair for address and prices.

dee - the frugal sewer

I wouldn't be ashamed. After all, whether they are expensive or not, they still need to be sharp. The less expensive just may not hold an edge like the good one.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my question. Very much appreciated.

My local sewing center is also a repair shop and they also sharpen scissors. It's well worth the small cost to have it done. Why struggle with dull scissors?

bcmachinerepairs 11-21-2012 08:34 AM

I sharpen scissors and pinking shears ,feel free to message for any details.
