I used to have a New Home. It was a pretty good machine, it got used a lot though. If you're doing tons and tons of sewing I would recommend that you get a machine that has all metal parts. The New Home had a metal shaft but a plastic cam, and that was what needed to be replaced, so I replaced it with an Elna.

Thanks pocoellie. The lady emailed me back that someone else wanted it. I'm not getting my hopes up. I really like the machine I have now, but I can never really turn down free stuff. :oops: Oh well, I guess it was meant to be this way.

I think that is the brand thats is the Janome before the name change? :D

I have a New Home and have used it ALOT for the past 20 years. I traded in a Singer (all plactic parts) for the New Home. At that time all of the gears and inner working parts were metal. I have not had to replace anything (knocking on wood) just having it cleaned once a year or so. I love it!! I also have a Baby Lock embroidery machine and I love that too. I wouldn't trade my New Home for anything.

I have 2 New Home/Janome machines and love them. Like someone said have them cleaned once a year or two, depending on use.

Melissa, My mom has had a New Home for over 20yrs and it is on my 'inherit' list and I keep telling her now that I need to 'store' it over here:)). It is like a work horse! She sewed my wedding dress on it over 23yrs ago and it still sews like a dream. That is correct that Janome is the New Home now. Which I love too!! In fact actually have 3 different ones of Janome from the generic basic one, to the 'Hello Kitty' for the kid and class work and now my Janome 6600. I still will make plenty of room for the New Home if mom decides to upgrade soon to a embrod. machine. It sews fast and efficient! I can't believe you could pick one up for free!! What the luck!! I have sewn on New Home/Janome machines since 1987. I am on my 5th, not because they wore out but because I upgraded. I love their machines! I don't think you will be sorry! I still have a 7000, 10000, and 11000.

I bought an old one at a flea market here in Raleigh years ago. It came with the book, attachemnts and a cabinet. I got it for $25.00. It just needs to have the tension adjusted, but its all metal so I know its old!

when i was 14 my dad bought me a necchi that he couldn't afford. i loved it for many, many, many years. i literally wore it out. those 33-yr-old quilts were started on that necchi. it was replaced about 20 yrs ago by the janome/new home 8000. it s a workhorse. never had a problem. ten years ago i added the viking #1. also a great machine, but not as nice as the janome.

I bought 2 of them about 15-years ago and have used them like a work horse and they have taken a beating and are as good as gold.

I bought my first NewHome in 1985. It is still in my garage. I plan on taking it in to have a complete service done on it. It is the BEST machine. About 12 years ago I bought a NewHome 8000. Love it. Last year I bought a Babylock but I still rather sew on myNewHome.
One other thing my serger is ( you gussed it) a New HOme.

i have one that old also, and i got the janome based on how much i loved the new home. now i have both + :lol:

I had a New Home and loved it..... If I am correct New Home is now Janome......... which I now have and love that machine too... Don't have the New Home anymore as I wore it out. Go for it.... you will like the machine.

I have been sewing on a New Home Class Mate S650 since the late '80s. It has never been serviced and still runs good. I went to the dealer in a near by town today to see what they had in an older manual New Home. I found an older manual, it is a New Home L-737. Bought it on the spot...now I have a "new" old machine. It sews great, and fits in my sewing machine cabinet just like my old Brothers and the old New Home Class mate.
Now I can put off buying one of the electronic one for several years.

I have the New Home 8000 and love it. When the grand kids were little they called it the magic machine as it could make pictures! Well we still use it and my grand daughter is 20 now and wants it when I retire it. I have other machines but the kids love this the best and you can imagine the use it gets.

My Girlfriend has 2 of them, she loves them..they are both about 20/25 years old..she stipples on them both..would not trade them for anything!

If anyone knows where I can get a copy of a user's manual for my L-737 I would appreciat knowing. At the store I got mine from, there was an old manual close by it, so we assumed it was the correct one, but when I got home and needed to look something up, it wasn't the right manual.

You beat me to it, but I do have an 1870 New Home Model A that I just picked up earlier this month for $15. Cabinet and the head no treadle but I have the correct year treadle under the carport of my studio with a BBQ grille in it LOL!!
