Anyone interested in a no waste, easy granny square quilt tutorial?

Hi all,
I recently cut all of my scraps into usable sizes and ended up with a decent sized stack of 2" squares. I decided they would look good in a granny square quilt, so I started looking up how to make one. The traditional method of making the blocks then cutting off the 16 outer triangles to make the block square didn't appeal to me because of all the waste. So I looked up a "no waste" method which had you create setting triangles for each block (16...UGGH). So, I started laying the squares out on the design board and started thinking about long diagonal strips and knew I would sew the wrong ones together at some point. Then I noticed that it's just a bunch of 9 patches on point. I'm including a couple of pictures to show that, but is anyone interested in a tutorial? I have never written one, but am ready for the challenge. It's a great block to use up scraps...

Thank you for sharing that observation! I was also wondering how to eliminate all those "setting triangles" from that block.

it is a crochet pattern originally, a good way to use leftover yarns. Lori Holt also has a way of making this with 2 1/2" sqs. and strips, then squared up on point...., better than fighting setting triangles!

I saw her method, but when I did the math saw that for 80 blocks, I would be wasting 1280 square inches of fabric in the squaring up process...that's almost a full yard! Plus, you end up with bias on all 4 sides..

The more tutes, the merrier! Yes, please post one!!!

I would be interested in your tutorial.

Great! I just need a couple of days to get it together. I'd like feedback when it's done so I can improve.

I am interested too. Nice way to use up my pile of scraps.

I'm interested too. I've crocheted Granny Squares but have no idea how to make a Granny Square quilt.

I have Lori Holt's book Great Granny Squared sitting here by the computer this morning....now I hear about bias edges! I'm interested in your tutorial because I want to make this quilt soon!

Thank you for taking the time to make a tutorial. Don't worry about it being your first attempt at making a tutorial. Gotta start somewhere. Who knows - you make be embarking on a whole new career - designing. Have fun. Don't feel pressured. We'll wait.

Just checked out Lori Holt's tute. Anxious to see yours. Jenny Doan also has an on point tute but doesn't involve multiple granny squares.

I am very interested. This pattern has been on my bucket list for a while now. About time I did it. Thank You.

Would love a tutorial, this design is on my want to do list, but the wastage out me off.

lorimax5859 05-24-2017 06:53 AM

Thank you so much for offering a tutorial - I would love to have it.

Joanie2 05-24-2017 07:13 AM

Would love a tutorial! I rarely throw any scrap away and have boxes of them in various sizes of strips and squares. I have the granny square pattern but have yet to make it. Looking forward to seeing your tutorial. Thanks.

sJens 05-24-2017 07:40 AM

I am interested in the tute too.

Redtop 05-24-2017 09:41 AM

Yes I'm interested too. I'm always looking for a nice pattern using my stash and this looks great.

Faintly Artistic 05-24-2017 03:04 PM

Part 1 is on the tutorials page. I will post the next part when I get some photos...I'm still making my initial blocks. I am considering a second tutorial about choosing color/fabrics as I have struggled with that in the past.

minibarn 05-24-2017 06:54 PM

Great, thanks for doing this going to see the tutorial now.

teacherbailey 05-26-2017 05:28 AM

Yes! I have wanted to make this quilt for awhile but hate the tediousness....
