Anyone remember the 3D log cabin made by cutting wedges?
It looks like it is done with sewing strips but it's wedges cut from strips. Someone here posted how it was done but of course can't find it. Just a hunch someone may remember it.

Could this be it?

I remember reading about it. Someone bought the kit from Amazon and put it together a different way. That's all I remember about one 3D log cabin pattern.

dunster,
I don't know if it is or not but I do like the pattern. Thanks for posting it. |
Thanks Dunster but that's not it. I have the Twisted Log Cabin book. This was a very striking 3D block that looked liked you could fall right in the center. I had pictures but they were removed. They are everywhere online. Google 3D log cabin block. I can't find a pattern though. All I know is it is made with wedges.

OneByOne .... you got my attention with your description, and curiosity got this cat!
Perhaps start with this link? If you don't find the pattern you want, post a link to the quilt closest to what you are thinking, and I bet someone will be able to help you find it. https://www.google.ca/search?source=...30.E28KrFwLwkM |
Is this what you are looking for? It's not wedges, but it's definitely 3D. https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...vt=0&eim=1,2,6
This is an interesting log cabin made with wedges. To me, it doesn't look that 3D. http://quiltindex.kora.matrix.msu.ed...abin_Davis.pdf |

I agree with QuiltE and thought it might be the link she posted. Here's another you may be able to get patterns from
http://www.quilt-addicts.com/never-say-never.htm I did up some pics for fun that will help, I hope. Sew fabric in strips ( I show ten 1 1/2" strips). From this you can cut 10 1/2" squares and cut once on the diagonal, then sew the sections A1 & A2 together along the diagonal side. You should get a block like this Now you can turn them different ways for the effect you like best. Make sure you join the same colored sections as half the blocks will have the color reversed. I used black sashing, but the end result would depend on the colors used. Gay, your pics are nice but wouldn't it be a bear to have to line up all those seams?

maybe this one? https://www.amishcountrylanes.com/Pages/hs1606.shtml

Great drawings and demos, Gay!

Is it by any chance the Wonky Log Cabin by Quilt in a Day? It does take a special ruler.

This is the pic I saved: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/69/e2...c3607954a9.jpg
And labeled it 3d log cabin made with wedges. I didn't save the info how it was done and can't find a pattern anywhere. At first look it seems it was done with strip sew like a log cabin. |

Or yes, as you have suggested, sew it like a 1/4 log cabin. If you go back to the original thread, I am pretty sure there were either links to the pattern, or someone shared a tutorial. The trick is getting the right fabric combos to give you that 3-D effect. Good Luck! |
The only link goes to a kit sold on Amazon. Someone here posted that someone she knew bought the kit and the pattern was wedges cut from strips. I suppose I can figure it out but having the pattern would be less brain work.

and find out more from her? It would seem (to me, at least) that Gay's tutorial might be considered wedges. |

I drew that pattern out in EQ7. This is the block made with 2 1/2 inch strips. I think the strips are bigger in the quilt on the bed. Maybe as big as 4 inches. It is a Quarter log cabin block. Color placement is everything. In the picture of the quilt, they show a border of the same color on each block on all 4 sides. I did the border as a sashing on the quilt I designed.
By the way....no wedges. Just straight strips |
I have checked all sources of the pic. None lead to anyone, all are reposts. I'll find it. It can be made with strips but the post here said how it was actually made by wedges. Just a long shot someone remembered.

You can see where the seamlines are. No wedges. It's done the same way as BarbInLouisiana's pattern drawing. |
Maybe you are talking about the self-mitered log cabin by Anita Grossman Solomon.
This is where you sew strips together, cut squares, and then cut into half-squares to make HST. Here is a post about it https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...t-t263684.html |
Thanks everyone, I got a lot of good info from everyone. The poster PMed me!!! I now have the directions and lots of pictures. It is made with wedges as her friend didn't do it like the photo. It's her decision to post it here or not.

I remember that log cabin on Facebook and with a long list of comments about using wedges or strips. Most preferred the wedges. There was no pattern to buy as the maker took a kit and made it different then the actual pattern. It looks like a fun quilt to make.

Could you give us a link back to her picture? I'd like to see how they set up the wedges.
(as I thought the link that you gave us was the quilt you were looking for, but apparently not so.) |
Thank-you Barb for taking the time to draw a pattern on EQ for us! You are such a giving person with your patterns, I always appreciate your efforts!

I have to apologize to everyone. When I drew the block I didn't even see the black strips. I redrew the block as 3 inch strips, with the outside border included and the black, unseen, strip. Hope no one started cutting out this block based on my drawing.
